If they can't come up with safer technology, hell, even I am skeptical as to whether they should drill or not.

I hate when "professional" people type this way. Not that I liked SP anyway but this lowered my opinion of her a little further

Remember BP owned the oil, but contracted the rig. TransOcean owned/operated the rig, but BP (Beyond Petroleum) gets the blame and the responsibility since they owned the crude. Besides who cares about TransOcean? I firmly believe they will come up with better technology/monitoring and drilling will continue, we won't be able to afford not to in the immediate future.
Oil companies are the probably the companies who have already spent the most money on developing alternative energy. These companies have been around a long time and have the bucks, technology and knowhow to be innovative enough to create new alternatives.
This whole thing makes me really sad as a former BP employee. Please don't forget that 11 people died in that explosion. Somehow they seem to get forgotten.

Would that be a slight upgrade over the wine you usually drink?

Exactly! No US off shore rigs have a remote shut off switch and have not been required to have them! But aside from that, IMO the oil rigs shouldn't be out in the ocean in the first place! Being dependent on oil has caused death, war and destruction! We don't need to use oil! There are far less destructive, cleaner and smarter ways to go!
Before you fuckin Cons say 'no way,' look no further than Brazil. Completely self sufficient without the use of oil. But I know, we're just a bunch of tree huggers, right?

Currently 3rd largest integrated oil company in the world.
Petroleo Brasileiro SA (ADR) aka Petrobas PBR
Although I agree Brazil has made a fortune making fuel from food, ethanol based on sugar cane. I guess that works??? Who needs rain forests anyway?

THis whole thing is a terrible tragedy on so many levels but it is no excuse to stop drilling.
But really, do you wanna know the sick thing? I haven't been able to really read an article on this since I've been up to my eyes in shit since this happened... so I've basically heard the radio reports on my drives in and out of work listening to the news. Wanna know the part of the story I heard stressed over and over? How bad it was gonna be for the animals on one hand, and that the first bird had been officially cleaned up with Dawn dishwasher detergent. Not once did they mention that 11 people died, and this is the first I've heard of it. Wow. Just a sad commentary on the state of the media and how people's agendas can twist or omit things to an absolutely absurd degree. Now, maybe other news stations reported that, but I really kinda doubt it... hell, the local channel I listen to for my news updates is run by Clear Channel and syndicates all the righty talk shows. Our priorities are so fucked up in this country.
