where's this clip from??

Is this Mt. Aire 82? If so, does a full length video exist?

Perry really sings this differently here. Not nearly as subtle as the Escape tour, but still way good.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

MY GOD is this an emotional delivery! This is the one and only time I heard his voice crack while singing....it's at the end on the word "hoping"....to me, it looks like he's gonna start crying....

I saw Journey the month before at the Philadelphia Spectrum. Steve's voice wasn't as clean as when I saw them open for the Stones 8 months prior to that but he was still great.

Considering that this was the third to last show of the tour and a YEAR into it, I think he sounds remarkably good here, but I can understand why he would have sounded a tad off 11 months into the tour, too!!

unfortunately, that cracking voice became somewhat more pronounced in later years (ie FTLOSM). He sounds pretty good on this one though. He was one consistent live singer--and one of the best live singers of all time.

open arms is not one of my favorite journey songs, but i loved this performance. he sings it with a bit more lightness & love than most other people who cover the song. i've heard way too many tense, almost angry sounding versions - like the singers are trying too hard to add passion into their voices.

Reminds of me of this from his q&a on Fan Asylum from a few years ago.

Did your mother ever get a chance to see you perform in a big Arena type show? I’m sure she was very proud of you.

SP: Oh yes, she did. She got to see us when we were at our very best. The last show she went to was the 4th of July 1982 Rose Bowl show in Pasadena CA. She was treated like a Queen by our crew and she felt very special. I need to thank them for that. I'll tell you something else. When she got there, I hadn't seen her in a while. I was kinda stunned to see how her sickness had progressed. When I was singing "Lights" I started to emotionally fall apart and had great difficulty tucking my emotions back. I got choked up and for a moment my voice faltered. She was getting very sick and it was so sad. It didn't hit me until I was in that moment on stage. I thought I was going to lose it in front of 90,000 people. She so loved the fact that my dream had been realized and at that moment...... I really felt it too.

Not the same show, but your post made me think of it.

I apologize if it was bad form to post an excerpt instead of providing a link....

You are talking one of THE Holy Grails of Journey shows. Some people claim to have it, but will not part with it, kinda like the ROR Mountain Aire vid.
There are 3 clips on YT from the show that were broadcast on VH1 Classic. There have also been a few more clips (30 second clips) posted at certain stages, but the poster likes to constantly tease and takes them down after a week or so. Asshole.

I so agree w/this ...prime example, Mariah!! She replaced the heartfelt passion/emotion w/squeals and vocal gymnastics, leaving
me yearning for the vulnerability and determination that is so effortlessly displayed right here^^^^in performances such as this!!

There are three or four clips from this show, including the first ever performance of Separate Ways. It's legendary.

I love these clips. It was nice to hear Steve knock it out of the park with DSB after that last group sing-along video with Elton John, LG, Bruce, etc, which was haunting me.

Great clips - it made me love "Separate Ways" again - every time I see the video I can't hear the song, just get bothered by the cheesy video production, and it turns me off for months. Of course, except for the literal version of "Separate Ways" which I find hilarious.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Talking about Oakland Coliseum and Rose Bowl shows '82 reminds me of the funny Herbie anecdote involving Bill Graham and the JBoys. :D Understandably, the ESCAPE tour was hugely successful....Herbie keeping the guys on the road for a whole year well into 1982. Steve and bandmates wanted to take a break, but Mr. Graham wanted to book them for the summer stadium shows. Steve said "no way!" Bill dropped on his knees, grabbing SP's hands, pleading and blubbering like a baby  . Steve gave in, and Journey played both stadium shows.

Jesus, that almost made me start crying. Nice story and I'm glad she got to see him at the exact time when he was greatest singer ... ever.

Byproduct of being hardcore fans gives us a perspective to analyze and critique. You can sure hear (in the '82 concerts) a voice that was transitioning to the Frontiers sound. Frontiers was a great album! And Escape was a great album!
