So you stopped reading before
Infinite Crisis? Most of the characters, esp the big 3 (Supes, Bats and Wonder Women) all had character re-boots and a fresh new direction after
Infinite Crisis back in 2005. The multiverse was returned and the known 52 galaxies remained, eventually forming into a "New Earth" as we have today. Superman, Batman and Wonder Women both took a year off of heroic duties to find themselves and during the events of Infinite Crisis, Superman didn't have his powers for the whole year and focuses on his journalist work as Clark Kent, as well as his marriage to Lois Lane.
Recently, Bruce Wayne "died" in Final Crisis and is now venturing through the existence of time from the worlds timeline at "0" and he must solve the riddle of all the time period of life on Earth to return back to life in today's timeline of existence. It's one of DC's big events. Right now, Dick Grayson (Robin) is the new Batman until Bruce is set to return.
Right now, Wonder Women's NEWEST direction has her with a whole different orgin of the character and even a changed costume.
The highly anticipated new Superman run is actually making press and T.V time around the country as he is literally (WALKING, yes walking) across America to bring back the original roots of his character and that is to re-kindle his connection to humanity and to all the hard working people of the world and trying to rebuild trust within him and the human kind.
It is VERY intriguing plot line. While Superman was away on another planet fighting for the safety of other worlds and saving the planet, he comes back to hoopla and media in his face who asks if he's lost touch with the people since he had to "choose sides" in the big event. One women runs up to Superman crying and slaps him in the face and tells him while he was gone, her husband died of a sickness and he wasn't even present on Earth where he could have done something about it. This gets to Superman and realizes how he's lost touch with what it's supposed to be about and is now walking America to re-kindle the spark of trust and worthiness to walk amongst us.
What sucks is that comic prices went from $1.00 from the 90's and now run at an EXPENSIVE $3.00 a comic, most $4.00-$5.00! Being a collector, the money I put back for silly things like comics makes me only follow Superman and his titles but I read up mostly online and read up on message boards to keep in touch with all of DC with the occasional TPB, which is a chore to consume haha.
