Great delivery, but his tone doesn't exactly grab me. But yet in spots when he backed off straining/pushes it he had great tone? I really liked it! Now I'll be nice too. :) Thoughts? You've Got A Friend LIVE https://www.yousendit.com/download/aHlU ... d0d4dnc9PQ

that pushing thing is pretty much his trademark, and his natural range...and to his credit, he can still sing in the same key as 30 years ago. His tone has changed a bit over the years (mainly in the late 90s/early 2000s when he was in a big drug mess--cocaine does wonders on vocal cords), but he kept his range. That distinctive tone is also why people either love his voice or compare it to an angle grinder--and worse. Interestingly, apparently one of the few singers who sings with their false vocal cords (ie he can have laryngitis and not be able to speak at all, but can sing perfectly). Rather strange...

speaking of people who can sing... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lKHwz06EAs. Never went out of Gospel, but one of the best high tenors I've ever heard--very much on the level with Perry for natural voice ability, and a lot of depth to the voice especially for the range. He isn't even breaking a sweat on this one (which is more pop ballad than gospel).

good stuff....he does well on that one. Easy one to oversing, and he doesn't fall into that trap.

I love this song.

Jeremey, are you guys not doing the slow piano intro version anymore or what? I loved that version and you guys didn't do it in Canton. Can't remember if you did it back in May at HoB or not. Inclined to think you didn't.

Hey man, we did it in June at HOB I believe with Chad...We have only been doing it with Chad as I haven't had the time to get other KB players up to speed on it, but we'll probably be switching Suzanne out for another tune in the new set....

Damn man. Well I was drinking at the June one, not at Canton though (1.5 hr drive home).

That's ok - new songs are great. That's part of the thrill of seeing Frontiers for me. Have a new one or two ready by Sept 6th at Taste of Cleveland. Thanks.

I've heard some good stuff from this tour....and some where it was a bit haphazard. This falls into the latter part. I don't mind fast and rocking, but they sound sloppy--at least on THIS recording.

As far as the album goes, I think it was Perry's attempt to have Journey do a Motown album. He was going down that road with Street Talk, and you get more of it here, but with better songwriting. For those that appreciate that sound combination (and you can count me in on this), there are some very good songs, and Perry's vocals are sublime--probably some of the best he ever recorded. You really hear the Sam Cooke influence in there, and his phrasing ability is miles beyond what it was on Escape.

Very nicely stated. I saw a bunch of shows on the ROR tour and I heard plenty of good stuff. Steve's intro to LTS was incredible - my favorite version of that song from any of their tours.

would that be the normal intro....or the crazy wild not-appropriate-for-children intro he did on some shows? The latter one, which may have been Philly, was NOT my favorite intro!

 I remember the intro you are talking about. Um...no. I'm talking about the slow, sexy, r&b version he did.

You'll have to admit it rough, at least. I've heard that Perry was going through some vocal issues related to physical illness at the time.

I imagine the energy of the performance and crowd caught up in a live concert by the band song after song is what made it still magical probably that night for them. Sitting in an audience enjoying a concert is much different than sitting here listening to a performance on a song that wasn't perfect. This song sped up is a little more forgiving to me than some of the others I've heard in the ROR concert, which didn't work at all. But there was a lot of deterioration in his voice noticeable on some songs compared to their last tour three years prior for sure.

This is a VERY difficult song to sing, especially if the drummer seems to be running on speed... I do like this song a lot, nice lyrics. Wasn't Suzanne Suzanne Sommers?
