They are what they are....and well they had over 35,000 at the concert I attended.....and no it was not only
women...there were plenty of men...on their feet for the entire show...loving all of it.

So yes they have gone down the road of many types of music....but I think they actually get it....you need
to move with the times to make the real money....and well they have and ARE.

There was NO dirty dozen...yes there were some old faves...but the new stuff was as well receipted as the old stuff...so check
your attitude and glands at the door...if you don't like the band then fine.

But to say they are not relevant is a JOKE!!!

They are WAY more relevant than the Journey of today.

good to know they are back to putting on a good show. I was going to hit one of their shows this tour as it has been a few years since I saw them (on a performance well below what they were capable of), but the closest they came was 3hrs away in the middle of the week--and that just wasn't happening. When they aren't phoning it in, they are a VERY good live band. The time prior to that one on the previous tour blew the roof off the stadium as had the previous show, which might account for the elevated expectations. Maybe I just hit a bad night.

They certainly have been mixing up the setlist with a good helping of new material, and some rare stuff. They have enough hits to do a very static setlist that would please most people, and they don't do that. They have kept changing styles, and that has never been a problem with me as long as the quality stays up.

You missed a really good show...they were fabulous!! and there were many here in my town who made the trip...who
have seen many shows and have been fans for years...they were spot on.

That's my point...They "get" it...the Facebook page is updated all the time....they reach out to new fans and the ones
who have been around since day one.

They mix it up...and there is plenty of new material....and the fans know it...verse by verse...they don't sit or go get a beer
they love it all.

To have a band who is still together and still packing stadiums here and overseas is a huge accomplishment...I also can say to
see Jon and Ritchie on stage...there is now a respect between them...I think they know that they together make the music
that still fills areas...together with the rest of the band they are Bon Jovi.

People can shit on Bon Jovi all they want....but they can still fill and sell out areas......there are not many bands
from the 80's who can still do that....are there??

They have come full circle....I know it's cliche....but if Perry were with Journey they might do the same??

no doubt about it. JBJ is a genius at management and marketing. He's done what it takes to keep them in the spotlight, and that is no easy feat. When Crush was released, Bon Jovi was bordering on nostalgia. 10 years later, they are very much in the here and now, and probably have a certain amount of fans who weren't around for the Slippery/New Jersey days. That's worth respect whether you like the music or not. It also gives the band tremendous freedom with the setlist, because you don't lose the audience as easy.

VERY few. Bon Jovi, Springsteen, Phil Collins solo, Genesis, Gloria Estefan, and a few in the heavy metal spectrum.

It's hard to say. They were set up very well to do just that, and then Perry took a 10 year vacation. I don't blame him to do what he had to do for himself, but I'm not sure he ever intended to come back to Journey. He was set financially from the early 80s run, so he didn't have to work. Jon Bon Jovi still has the fire. Perry either never got it back, or has other issues to keep him off the stage. Sad for the fans, but it's the way life is.

If Journey had kept going with Perry with an album every couple of years, they could very well be in the position Bon Jovi is today. The sound would have modernized over time, but I'd say it is quite possible. They might have done it had they found the right person to replace Perry immediately post-ROR, which in hindsight is what they SHOULD have done if they wanted a viable band in the 2000s.

The ten-year break hurt them a lot, and Perry disappearing immediately after TBF was the final nail in the coffin for them being nostalgia. They are doing better than just about ANY 80s band save the big guys (Bon Jovi, Springsteen, etc) without the most important member of the band--at least from an audience perspective. Compared to how a lot of 80s bands are faring, Journey isn't in all that bad of a situation.

Good news is they probably will come around again. If it had been a weekend, I probably would have made the trip. Not sure why they skipped this area this year, but Raleigh can be a weird crowd. Some days you get a rock crowd, and others you think they were going to see the symphony. Maybe next time I will have better luck.

Well at least you get it.

To say that Bon Jovi is not relevant is BS...the concert I attended had fans from 8 to 65.

Do I love all of their music...no...but I love most of it....and well I did not sit at all.....the crowds energy was
contagious!! So was Jon and the Band..they love it...and well there is the fire you talk about...To hear
Someday I'll be Saturday Night...for me was something to remember.

I slipped the Journey thing in....if they had gone the course and stayed together...than yes they would be right up
with the Bon Jovi boys...but now...well it's not the same....three lead singers and the whole mess that came with it
all....they have pretty much sealed their fate.

Love Bon Jovi or not...and the others you mentioned...there are few who can still do it...and well
they get my respect...I had a ball!!! To be able to go back in time and feel 17 again for one night in
my mind is priceless!! To have the original singer...was the best part of it all!

My issue with Bon Jovi is that I think JBJ is burned out on the business end of it--and that came across very strong on that Showtime documentary. I think his enjoyment of performing live is the only thing that keeps him going. As an artist though, I think he's lost the passion and a Bon Jovi record is done moreso because it makes sense to release an album every two years to keep the BJ brand strong more than having a bunch of songs you really believe in and can't wait to record.

I haven't heard that passion much since These Days was released. Have a Nice Day had a bit of it, but more than anything, what I have heard is Bon Jovi by the numbers. I just don't hear that inspiration on songwriting the way I heard it on the pre-Crush albums (and solo material). It's irritating to watch someone who is capable of great things just coasting on cruise control. I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way either.

I agree it's like watching Perry at a baseball game..you want to scream!! HEY we need the music!!

BUT..Jon is still is out there..and well the new stuff is good...not great...but they need to dig deep....do they have to??

No....even when they scratch the surface it's good enough..and there you have it...the music of today it not what we

have seen in our day....but what they do is enough...for 35,000 +...and well it was good enough for me!!! I loved it!

To be honest what is in my CD player in my are....Houston, Journey, ROR Journey, Skid Row 1980's, TBF Journey, and Bon Jovi Circa 1980's and on....it's the music that I LOVE! There is not going to be anything to replace it ever,

That's fine for the time being, but I get the feeling you are leading up to another long overdue hiatus for the band. I think they need to go away, do solo albums, and come back in 3 years recharged and ready for another run. It's better for the long-term health of the band. They are fine live...it's the rest that needs "help".

I don't know...for me the Circle was a good CD...I liked it...was it Slippery When Wet...NO..but it's not the 80's is it??

I think it's hard to be a band from the 80's..in 2010...how do you balance it all.

But they are packing stadiums on the old stuff and the new stuff!! WTF....yeah the are not relevant....bulllshit.

I think the way you do it is put out a good cd. Pick your style and give 10 or 12 good songs. The rest will take care of itself.
I don't mind the style, and honestly don't want another Slippery When Wet. Listing These Days as a favorite should make that one abundantly clear! ;)

I just want to hear that passion and fire that Bon Jovi used to have a lot of. You heard it through all the style changes, and it occasionally rears its head still. You still get it live most of the time, even on some of the newer material. I'm just not hearing much of it in the studio recently.

Yeah the passion...the give it all you got...Bon Jovi has it...His performance of Always was unbelievable at Gillette.

I have NO doubt we will see another Bon Jovi CD that kicks ass...way before a Journey one.

They have the fan base..even with a OK CD....if it is one of passion...well they already sell out

stadiums...then what??

I am sorry but it comes from a band of brothers....and well Journey never had that commitment...Jovi went
down a dark road and they came back..somehow they knew they needed each other was the key to success.

I am starting to believe that Journey and Bon Jovi are in two different leagues.

Perry has/had a WAY better voice and delivery...it really sucks to think it's over.

the weird thing is that I hear the passion in some of the Journey stuff. Livin to Do, Walking Away from the Edge, Out of Harms Way, and others along the way. It's not Perry-era Journey, but I hear the passion.
I hope we get that great Bon Jovi cd again. They have the talent if they can put the pieces together.

portland wrote:Perry has/had a WAY better voice and delivery...it really sucks to think it's over.

I'd love to hear what Perry could do with some of the above-mentioned songs, but you can't have everything. I find it easier to move on from Perry ever returning and being pleasantly surprised if he ever does, than to continue getting hopes dashed year after year ad infinitum.

Talent isn't everything, and it has no measure on success. Perry is one-of-a-kind, but there are plenty of very good singers who didn't achieve any success. Just consider yourself lucky that someone found the talent and brought him forward for the masses to hear. I wish he would have done more, but Perry achieved far more than I bet even he thought was possible. It's not how much you do--it's what you do with what you have. In that, he did as good as any singer out there. Look at the all-time favorite singer polls for justification on that one!

portland wrote:They have the fan base..even with a OK CD....if it is one of passion...well they already sell out stadiums...then what??

Did they sell out?? I don't think so??

They are loved by a wide fan base...and for them it's all they need.

Let the haters hate. They will anyway regardless of what the band does. Many bands could learn a bit from how Bon Jovi handles business and soliciting fan input. They have had some breaks, but nobody succeeds in this business these days purely on lucky breaks. Being very good at what you do is a large part of it.

The bottom line is that Bon Jovi would be in the same position as most of their contemporaries if they had stuck with the SWW/NJ style. Moving on is what allowed them to survive. There is more to rock music than your 80s big hair pop rock anthems. Different doesn't necessarily mean worse--sometimes it's just different. A good song is a good song regardless of style.

Agreed the haters will hate....But not needed at all.

Jovi is what it is...a great band who knows what the lyrics and songs are needed to

sell....and having pretty much the original line up helps...fuck you if you don't get it.

no, but you can't stop it either. It's a vocal minority who likely wouldn't be buying the albums anyway. I'm sure it doesn't bother the band. You will never please everybody, so please yourself first, and then worry about the fans second.

the original (or at least close-to original) lineup is great for chemistry. I'm always impressed by the bands that pull it off considering how many crumble. Giving somebody fame and a lot of money doesn't make them a nicer person however, so I see both sides of the story. As many pitfalls exist for a band, it's amazing that some can keep it together.

The fans would be at peace as long as you have JBJ and Sambora together. You could eject the rest and replace them by very competent musicians. The chemistry might suffer until you got the right pieces clicking, but I doubt it would hurt them that much--at least from a live performance level. Personal interactions might be a totally different story however.

no, but you can't stop it either.

See well maybe you ARE WITH ME!!....Bon Jovi and Sambora ...ARE Bon Jovi and they know it....Just as Perry and Schon are Journey....Point blank...at least Bon Jovi got it.

Edit on my end...it does not matter who gets along with who...Perry and Schon hated one another....it does not mean that
the music was not the best.

Jon and Ritche seem to understand it's the sum of the parts!

The best bands are better than the sum of their parts. You can hate each other personally, and still produce magic together. Many bands were built on that chemistry point, where you get something working together that doesn't happen on your own. It's either there or it isn't.

The focal point of Bon Jovi is certainly the JBJ/Sambora relationship, but may well stretch into the other guys also. Even ejecting someone as replaceable as a drummer can drastically change the chemistry. They have done what it takes to keep it working where many have failed. More power to them!

We agree....and well the rest sucks.

The replacement in the lead singer for the Journey has way too much against him...the diction problem
shut him down...not just my opinion....there ARE MANY!!

I just wish for one more tour..for that feeling I LOVE JOURNEY...SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!

I can say Bon Jovi filled the hole...they ROCKED THE HOUSE!!!!

The ball is in Perry's court--and always has been. The money to be made would be astronomical, even from a limited 10 date tour. The question is whether he wants it or not. You don't remove yourself from something like this unless either you don't want to do it.....or can't. I don't know which to believe.

So yes they have gone down the road of many types of music....but I think they actually get it....you need

Too many comments to quote, so I'll skip that and say this...

I definitely respect Bon Jovi the machine for surviving. I don't even think they are irrelevant, at least not to modern pop culture anyway. Obviously not if they're selling out arenas and putting out albums. But these days you have to pay a huge price to get there and stay there, and it's usually at the cost of musical integrity or fan loyalty. It's called "selling out". Most of the stuff that makes the airwaves is crap, but it's what the record companies want to push so that's what gets played. Bon Jovi has to follow those rules if they want to keep raking it in to this degree. They basically sold their musical souls.

That being said, I still don't see why they can't hire some outside writers who will come up with a killer album. I was listening to Daughtry's first album just yesterday, and that damn thing is excellent song for song. I could swear I've heard almost every song from that album on the radio, which is really rare these days. So it's proof you can be commercial and still write great songs. Just being "listenable" doesn't really satisfy me anymore. Hell, if Don Dokken can keep putting out great albums every time, I'd think Bon Jovi could if they tried.

Point taken.....is Bon Jovi perfect? NO

but someone said they are not relevant...and that is not true...they sell out areas...not many bands can do
that in this day...to me it makes them VERY relevant!

Today's music industry follows style over substance. Just look at who the judges on idol push to the head of the pack. Sure, you have to have a halfway decent voice, bit beyond that it is image, and a marketable look/personality...100% psychology. The music consumer in this day and age are sheep...with todays POP and r&b culture ONE hit single can sustain a label for months...anything that follows is gravy. Bon Jovi IS irrelevant to the faction that were there since Roulette, She Don't Know Me, and Runaway...and that includes THIS fan. 27 years removed from the debut, they are cashing in on PAST accomplishments...Jon & co. are still riding Living on A Prayer...and they have LONG since forgotten how to write a decent rock anthem....

maybe, but I stand by the point that they would be irrevalent to the music industry had they not moved on from that sound. The fact that they are still selling albums and selling out large venues means the majority of the fans DID move on from SWW/NJ--or they picked up a fair number of new fans to replace those that didn't move on.

Every band deserves to grow and evolve their own sound. My beef is that Bon Jovi is cranking out low-quality s*** and people are eating it up, just like McDonald's. Neither are healthy for you.

I agree. It's not really that they move with the times and try to stay current and leave their earlier sound. It's that still most of their songs sound generic and nothing new or fresh no matter which genre they're trying like country-rock, save a couple of songs here or there. I agree with you, they need to bring in new songwriters to jumpstart their stagnant creative process.

I think that maybe you are right that you need to see a live show to see the passion that he still has.
You may be right that his enjoyment now comes from playing live in front of 30,000 people every night.
When they preformed Keep the Faith at the show I went to....it was clear that he was loving it.
I guess there are plenty of people who don't love what they are putting out there....but by the numbers of
the concert goers that have paid a ton of money for tickets to see them...they are doing something right.

Bon Jovi may be Living on a Prayer...not a bad place to be with 30,000 singing along.

I just put up the song for anyone who was interested in hearing it.
