The only thing New Years signifies is that you are one year closer to the grave.

Eeyore is a little harsh ...but I agree!!

I agree. But I usually say it in a nicer way than that. I just don't understand the point of doing it on Jan. 1st. If you're choosing to change something about yourself or make a big change in your life, what difference does it make if you do it on the first day of the year or the 132nd?

It's my belief that forcing yourself to do it because it's "New Years" is setting yourself up for failure, because you aren't ready. You're doing it because you've been thinking about it for awhile and then New Years comes along and you try to force yourself into a resolution. I've seen exactly ONE person in my life actually succeed at something they resolved for New Years.

I'm with you, Mel. I think new year's resolutions are great. It's easy to track the day you started said resolution on, and it gives you a fresh start and clean slate. Sure, you could start them at any time like a few have mentioned, but you could also buy presents, don them with Christmas wrapping paper and put a fucking tree in your house in June, but people save that for Christmas, just like people save resolutions for the New Year! Tradition, bitches!

I think the point being ...there's never a bad time of the year to do good things, take better care of yourself,
do nice things for others, save more money, quit smoking ...or the bong thing ...you don't have to wait until
Jan ONE, unless you need the calendar to mark time ...That was his point!! :D

I've never made a New Year's resolution in my life... not for lack of goals or things I want to improve. I just continually set goals and try to meet them depending on what's going on in my life. I set a goal to cut back on my drinking in August (notice, I didn't say quit), and I'm going strong 4 months with that. I guess I'd like to keep that going. It's been nice to get my weekends back, especially Saturday mornings, which is one of the few times I have to go hit some tennis balls or play some pickup hoops and enjoy myself these days. I've probably only been really hammered about 5 or 6 times in the last 4 months.

It's not like I was drinking all the time or anything, just heading to the bars once a week like most people my age do. But, I just got sick of the whole scene. Honestly, it's in large part due to the awful music I'm subjected to at just about every bar I go to. It's honestly not fun for me to go somewhere and have rap music blasted in my ears all night. It's not a good time to me. Now, give me the right occasion and I'll be right there pounding beers (a sports game, a concert etc), but I just realized it's not worth it just for the sake of drinking at bars and going deaf from rap and club music anymore.

Wow. You're really smart today. I personally find the best way to quit with something is through a bet. If someone tells you that you can't stop with a habit or do whatever, then you kindly tell the person to go fuck himself and show him/her what you're made of. There's nothing that can compare to the feeling you get when you tell someone:
I told you so.
