Pet peeves about Journey music

Postby Ligzig » Sat Jan 29, 2011 4:02 am

I haven't listened to Journey music in a long time, but I had seen a clip of "Patiently" being played and I remembered a line in that song that goes..

"In the shadow of love
Time goes by leaving me helpless
Just to reach and try
To live my life
These are my reasons"

It always bothered me why the line at the end didn't go "These are my reasons why...." if only to add that poetic touch and give it a rhyme. Just kind of bothers me and I expect a little more before the chorus starts.

Is there any lyric, music or song related to Journey that you have a pet peeve about?

I like it the way it's written and believe the phrasing would change detrimentally with the addition of the extra lyric.

Now, I have a problem, lyrically, with pretty much all of "Evolution" as well as "Castles Burning" and "Back Talk".

The total lack of anything heavy. I like the heavier side of Journey and I just haven't saw much of that in their last few albums. I'd like to see some heavy stuff along the same vein as Hardline. I liked Neal's work on the album.

"Homemade Love" Why? This whole song irks the shit out of me.

Oh, oo.
Oo, baby.
I love cookin' with honey.
I love to make you feel funny.
I love the way you do.
I want, I want it with you, yeah.
Homemade love, jelly roll love.
Homemade love.

I need a jelly roll sweetie.
Now, spread it oh spread it on me, babe.
Feels so good, on the top.
Spread it around, baby, till I drop ya'.
Homemade love, hot jelly roll love.
Homemade love.

Oh, baby, oh baby,
I know you love it.
Homemade love, oh, baby.
I know you love it.
So love it.

Oh, homemade love, hot jelly roll love.
Homemade love.
Homemade love, hot jelly roll love.
Homemade love.
Oh, baby, baby, baby
Homemade love, hot jelly roll love.
Homemade love.

Oo, smokin',
Oo, baby, you're burnin'
Oo, baby, it's boilin', ah.

Loved Hardline.

But I think Journey's chance at doing anything heavy was lost when they dumped JSS. HE would have been the most awesome way they could have transitioned themselves that direction while still keeping true to Journey, given Journey's great influence on him as a singer. But now, hearing anything 'heavy' from them I doubt will ever happen. I'll be happy to eat my words if their next album proves me wrong though, and isn't the sugar-fest that is Revelation.

Dumping JSS was a stupid idea in my opinion, they could have opened a door to a whole new group of fans. I saw them in Buffalo with Def Leppard and JSS blew everybody out of the water hands down.

They have gotten new fans with Arnel too. The difference being these fans carry rosary beads and like drinking nothing stronger than Aquafina.

Get them some bumble bee gear and the 'New' Journey could be Stryper 2.0

That's what bugs me, they're selling out to the Kool-Aid drinking crowd. That's the wrong group of fans, they change their mind as often as they change their clothes. If the new album isn't exactly the same as Revelation then they can kiss these fans goodbye.

We did ILAA, so we had the second row maybe? I can't remember! Maybe Melissa remembers! Seems like forever ago now! It was fun though! We wanted to see them again with JSS and ILAA, since we were far away in Tampa, and Buffalo was the cheapest ILAA and flight we could find. I grew up in Erie, so Buffalo was a place I'm familiar with too!

Sure seems to have worked out, though.

ebake02 wrote: they could have opened a door to a whole new group of fans.

And fit them all in a phone booth. There would have been a net mass exodus and baritone Journey would have flopped.

Saw that tour, too, and the new wore off really fast. I think the fact the shows were finally almost completely live gave the lineup a huge initial lift, but it soon became apparent it wasn't a sustainable lineup. The music, mainly the back catalog, needs a soaring tenor and Soto couldn't provide that. You'll realize why Arnel was picked when you hear the new stuff. If it's as heavy as I've been told, I think they may commercially lose a lot of the bubble gum crowd. In my mind, I'm hearing Europe's heavier songs, but with more polished hooks and melodies, when I try and "hear" what I have been told. Should be interesting. 1 ballad and 1 that is semi-ballad-like. 2 screamers and the rest rockers.

I was going to college in Erie at the time and I still remember that long long drive up I-90 and back.
