Sammy's New Book

Postby RocknRoll » Sun Feb 13, 2011 3:11 pm

A bit of a preview of Sammy's new book. I'm definitely getting this one...and I think those bridges are already burned. Obviously Sammy doesn't care at this point. Good on Him!!

http://www.marinij.com/diningandfood/ci_17353018

Sammy Hagar's memoir, "Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock," doesn't comes out until March, but I've just finished reading an advance copy and I can tell you that there's one poor guy who's going to wish it had never seen the light of day: Eddie Van Halen.

Sammy's one of the nicest guys I've met in rock 'n' roll, but Marin's Red Rocker shows his former Van Halen bandmate no mercy, portraying Eddie as more street person than guitar god.

This is Sammy describing him just before their Van Halen reunion tour in 2003: "I hadn't seen him in 10 years. He looked like he hadn't bathed in a week. He certainly hadn't changed his clothes in at least that long. He wasn't wearing a shirt. He had on a giant overcoat and army pants, tattered and ripped at the cuffs, held up with a piece of rope. I'd never seen him so skinny in my life. He was missing a number of teeth and the ones he had left were black. His boots were so worn out he had gaffer's tape wrapped around them and his big toe still stuck out."

In passages like that, "Red" reads like one of those angry e-mails we write when we're really ticked off at someone and need to vent by trashing him or her. But once we chill out, most of us don't hit the send button. With this book, Sammy hits the send button.

And he hits it over and over. After describing the squalor that he claims Eddie lived in, Sammy lays into him again, writing: "This was Eddie Van Halen, one of the sweetest guys I'd ever met. He had turned into the weirdest (expletive) I'd ever seen, crude, rude and unkempt."

So how do you really feel, Sammy?

After his "I Can't Drive 55" made him an arena-level headliner, Sammy joined Van Halen in the mid-'80s, replacing David Lee Roth, another guy he has no use for.

"I hated Dave," he writes. "The guy rubbed me wrong. I'm sure I rub all kinds of people wrong, so it's not like I'm putting him down. The guy was a great front man, great attitude in rock, and had an image from hell, but I just couldn't stand the guy. He was the opposite of what I believed in and what I am. First of all, the guy's not a great singer and he acts like he's the coolest, hottest guy in the world when, to me, he looks gay."

I don't know who's going to be more upset by that, Roth or gay people?

Settled down now at 63, Sammy writes ecstatically about his second and current wife and their contented family life. But when he was younger and his first marriage was on the skids, he took full advantage of his rock star status during his decade as lead singer of Van Halen.

"I was eating in the greatest restaurants, drinking the finest wine, flying on private jets, walking on stage to sold-out audiences going crazy. The only thing missing was ... I don't think anything was missing."

Groupies certainly weren't missing. Like the other members of what Sammy calls "the biggest rock band in the world," he had his own sex tent underneath the stage. Roadies would stock it with "five or six girls" every night, and Sammy writes about getting it on with them during Van Halen's nightly guitar solo. On this particular subject, he reveals a little more than I'd prefer to know, but it will probably sell a lot of books.

It seems like everything Sammy does makes money. At the beginning of his career, he was smart enough to buy the "architectural wonder" of a house on Mount Tam where he still lives for only $60,000 down, a pittance now. He was on the road a lot, so he started a successful travel agency in Mill Valley. He has a profitable fire sprinkler company in Fontana, the blue collar Southern California town where he grew up. And his Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, has spun off into franchises in Lake Tahoe and other places.

More recently, he made headlines when he sold his Cabo Wabo tequila company to the Campari Group for $80 million in a deal that lets him keep 20 percent of the business.

"If I wanted to be a billionaire, I probably could," he writes. "It's probably not that hard. But I'm not interested."

From that, it's clear that Sammy, with Joel Selvin, didn't write "Red" for the money. So he must have had other motives, like getting even with the Van Halen brothers, Eddie and Al, for not showing up at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2007, leaving him and bassist Mike Anthony to go it alone.

The question of whether Sammy quit Van Halen or was fired doesn't really get answered in "Red," as far as I can tell. One thing it does do, though — "Red" is hot enough to burn bridges.

There you go Neal, Sammy gave you the blue print now it's your turn.

I got a feeling though that Gay Dave and Toothless Eddie are still the bigger draw If they ever decided to go back out on the road. 8)

I don't think trashing past band members is cool, though I am more fond of Sammie's voice than Roth. But my husband loves Roth more than Sammy, so I guess it is up to preference on the music side of things.

Doing a tell all dirty laundry book is a bit high school. If your personalities don't mesh, move on, but let the fans love their rock idols without you marring their image of them. If both parties do the same it becomes more like two high school girls trashing each other on facebook. Turns most people off in all reality, and it is not a great reflection on yourself, you just come across as bitter.

...and this Rock&Roll lifestyle probably appeals to some of the younger generation. Sounds a lot like Nikki Sixx, his book was definitely interesting and it looks like he had a similar lifestyle to Eddie's

To me the Roth era was the real Van Halen, but then again that's when I discovered the band so I'm sure to be a bit biased.

The sign they used to have on their trailer door is just fucking classic.

It always sounded like Neal and Eddie were sorta friends at one time, but Journey was what it was in those days, I remember reading an interview where Neal played an HSAS tape for Eddie prior to Sammy joining VanHalen.

I remember that  ...I actually like both singers...they were very different.

I think I lean towards Sammy because 5150 was the music I tended to listen to more.

BTW Steveo did you see Sammy's comments on the VH1 Hard Rock Songs? I think he and Neal have been firends forever!!!

I'm in the middle of Ozzy's bio now, "I am Ozzy," and some spots it has me laughing so hard, I'm crying. In others, it's just so sad, I feel like crying. He talks about everything in excruciating detail, but it's not mean. He says it's how he remembers things and he's quite sure others remember it all differently.

Postby No Surprize » Mon Feb 14, 2011 12:27 am

More of the same. we've all given our Sam & dave opinions in the past, but Sam goes overboard here. Its an insecure douche bag that airs his dirty laundry like this.

When asked about Sam, Dave usually brushes it off, like "why are we even discussing this"....While most nail it, VH Roth era is legendary, without that, Sam wouldn't even have BEEN in VH, and without VH his career was and would have been on par with Billy Squire, .38 Special, Night ranger, LoverBoy. In other words shit on a shingle motherfucker! Rick Springfield covered a Sam tune. fluff.

And Has Sammmy looked in the Mirror for fuck's sake? Back in the 80's? For real? You may smirk at Roth's bandana's etc, Sammy wore THE Gayest shit in rock history. THe "I can't drive 55"(gay SONG, stupid lyric) Ronald McDonald jump suit? The beyond tight spandex pants with yellow clown hightops. THe Side show bob haircut?

This guy has the nerve to go to the R&R HOF ceremony. It was the ROTH years that put them in there.Greatest and coolest frontman ever... Sammy is a fat fuck and sings about gay songs.. David lee roth is the party, singing about chicks, alcohol and drugs!! VH is DLR!
Dave was 50% of that band. You guys who bash him are being blinded by the IMAGE. Dave and Eddie wrote those songs and they weren't great, THEY WERE CLASSIC!

Dreams, The "Alien" song, synth music at it's finest! I'll Take "Mean Street", Dirty Movies", Sinners Swing", "Unchained" any fucking day over that!

I read that, need to go back and read it again. Right now I'm reading "Life" by Keith Richards". He makes Ozzy look like a Saint in comparison.

I can't wait!! I love the cold hard facts as told by the person/people who lived them ...it's history, and much
better than reading about it in the media. Eddie can always come back with his own facts, which
would probably make an even more interesting read ...

Sammy Hagar is a only good/very good vocalist, but he seems like a heck of a guy. He and Michael Anthony were the only 2 members of that band with any class. The 2 Van Halen brothers exude trash and David Lee Roth is a shit vocalist, an even bigger goof and a few dollars away from being a circus carnie. The early Van Halen sound was tremendous. It was ground breaking, fresh and had some revolutionary guitar on it. But Roth's vocals were nothing more than a needed voice to be able to themselves a "band." The Hagar years, while not as technically ground breaking, brought in better vocals, instant chart topping success and the band finally had some class. Sammy and Mike are better off without them and while I'm not a huge Chickenfoot fan, I think I might be checking them out this summer ... possible more than once.

Agreed. Have always liked Hagar era VH so much better.

Have only seen Chickenfoot once live, and they were awesome live. I know some don't like the album much, and I too wasn't a huge fan of it, lol, but those songs live come across great. Sammy is just one of the greatest frontmen, Chad Smith is a monster drummer (I remember Gayle saying he was "obscene", that's how good  ), and then of course Satriani ---> awesome, lol. They are great to see live!

Seems like a heck of a guy? How could you possibly know this? Hell, I could say the same about Dave & Eddie, and Alex, they just don't go airing their dirty laundry in public, like sideshow Bob. A shit vocalist? Your kidding right? It's not always about the vocals, it's fronting a band and their image. Granted, Roth can't hit high notes, but the songs weren't about that. At least Roth sounds like a man and more importantly, acted like one. It's funny how sideshow Bob "Stoled" the
drinking routine onstage from Roth. You know what they say though, "Always imitate the behavior of winners when you lose".

Hagar sings circles around Roth. Roth may be the better showman, but vocally, he's never been very good, and now he's pretty much relegated to a half an octave. This next album should be interesting.

Probably pretty hard to do when you stand to lose more than gain in a shit tossing contest. Besides, Sammy hasn't dropped any bombshells. All of this stuff that has been mentioned is just more specific details about already known stuff. Those 3 clowns don't have any fucking friends and don't even get along with each other!

I can agree with you to a certain extent here. However, he ws all image and virtually no vocals. There were some cool studio shrieks and other wizardry that made some of the vocals come off as difficult, but there isn't a live show known to man where Roth is going to impress any of his peers.

David Lee is nothing but a egomaniac poser, he would be a nobody if Ed and Al hadn't chose him, the guitar made that band and DLR was just along for the ride.

Sammy was the bomb in Montrose... in VH he was no where as "Vegas" as DLR....

VH wasn't just EVH Guitar... songs need lyrics to be come classics (try to find a strictly guitar song that is one)... and DLR had a pretty huge hand in VH songs that have become classics....

He wrote some great ones, I'll give him that respect. He was just too much of a clown for my taste.

No Surprize wrote: A shit vocalist? Your kidding right? It's not always about the vocals, it's fronting a band and their image.

I can agree with you to a certain extent here. However, he ws all image and virtually no vocals. There were some cool studio shrieks and other wizardry that made some of the vocals come off as difficult, but there isn't a live show known to man where Roth is going to impress any of his peers.

I'm not getting into a pissing match about Roth's vocals, hell there are probably thousands of actual singers who can sing circles around him. It was all about the "Frontman" image in my opinion. It fit the band and what they were about. The rapport with the audience, the drinking on stage, it fit the image of what Van Halen was all about. Nice video on Sammy, it's good that he gives, but whose to say the others in Halen haven't? They could and probably have just quieter about the way they give and who they give to. I to am going to be very interested in how the new Halen cd sounds. I for one am just glad they decided to give it a try again. I hope it's like this:
