8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan

when it was all said and done....the surge stopped about 30 feet from our front door....we are about 800 yards and 2 roads from the ocean...we hightailed up the crater last night....but when we came back and saw how close it came...well....we were incredibly lucky....living with my folks now...87 band 81...and they did pretty good thru it all.....yes...weird shit happening everywhere lately....kind of troubling...

The rad represents a certain dose of energy absorbed by 1 gram of tissue. It is a unit of concentration. So if we could uniformly expose the entire body to radiation, the number of rads received would be the same whether we were speaking of a single cell, an organ (e.g., an ovary) or the entire body (just as the concentration of salt in sea water is the same whether we consider a cupful or an entire ocean).

The radiation, if it all goes to hell, will be able to reach an area over 20 km - any further away from the reactor and it'll be harmless, so I wouldn't worry about having to start wearing Geiger counters and lead suits in LA
