Here is some news from my local CBS station.

http://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2011/03/11/crescent-city-docks-severely-damaged-by-tsunami/

I have been looking around the Crescent City television stations, and not one has anything up, in video, about the tsunami. But here is some video from a Medford, Oregon station, covering Crescent City and the Oregon Coast.

It does get loud, and in the background, you can hear kitty howling..

That was the Tsunami Alert that came on the screen right when the shaking stopped.

I heard that warning sound, Don. If you listen carefully, the cat is meowing in the background, from the 2.01 mark to about 2.27, as the quake was subsiding.

I heard that cat, I'm just saying that the Tsunami alert was almost instanteous. So people knew immediately if they where in that red area to hightail it out of there.

Japan has just had one of their worst catastrophes in history, and you're thinking about if some radiation will tickle your ass?

This shit is awful. I'm going there next month to help out.

That's true, but organizing humanitarian aid on this type of scale takes time.

rad

The rad represents a certain dose of energy absorbed by 1 gram of tissue. It is a unit of concentration. So if we could uniformly expose the entire body to radiation, the number of rads received would be the same whether we were speaking of a single cell, an organ (e.g., an ovary) or the entire body (just as the concentration of salt in sea water is the same whether we consider a cupful or an entire ocean).

rem

Some forms of radiation are more efficient than others transferring their energy to the cell. To have a level playing field, it is convenient to multiply the dose in rads by a quality factor (Q) for each type of radiation. The resulting unit is the rem ("roentgen-equivalent man"). Thus, rem = rad x Q. X rays and gamma rays have a Q about 1, so the absorbed dose in rads is the same number in rems. Neutrons have a Q of about 5 and alpha particles have a Q of about 20. An absorbed dose of, say, 1 rad of these is equivalent to 5 rem and 20 rem respectively.

Radiation exposure for the average individual is 620 millirems per year, split about evenly between manmade and natural sources. The firefighters who served at the Chernobyl plant were exposed to between 80,000 and 1.6 million millirems. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission estimates that exposure to 375,000 to 500,000 millirems would be sufficient to cause death within three months for half of those exposed.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Well - geeze, the concern is for a little more than a tickle, after some additional research, apparently this graphic is being promoted from organizations which manufacture radiation protection equipment out of Australia (Drew??? ;-) ...but point taken, some dick bag photoshopped the original photo - travel safe in your humanitarian efforts and be a good man in the storm

Check out this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hfJQzxK4nU&feature=player_embedded It's pretty informative.

The radiation, if it all goes to hell, will be able to reach an area over 20 km - any further away from the reactor and it'll be harmless, so I wouldn't worry about having to start wearing Geiger counters and lead suits in LA

Last I saw through the Tribune's twitter feed, the meltdown was likely in progress at the second reactor.

My friend is saying that the Tokyo Tower is leaning at an alarming angle. Schools in Tokyo are cancelled for Monday. With this nuclear stuff going on, I'm even more worried about her now than I was before.

Tom, I'm so glad you're ok and made it through. As for that video, that had to be terrifying even for the people up on the high building. Might as well film though, because you sure couldn't run from it.

I saw a pic of the antenna on top of the Tokyo Tower leaning.

this is all so sad and scary, we need to pray for Japan  I lived there in the late 80's and they were so nice to me. I feel terrible

Man, they're saying this nuclear episode over there could easily be worse than Chernobyl. Especially worse for the U.S. because the jet stream will carry the radiation right to us.

Back in the 50's and early 60's wasn't the gov't doing nuclear bomb tests in the Pacific as well as Nevada? I still remember waayy back when, my mom telling us not to eat the snow and I lived in Utah.
