Two questions I haven't heard answered.

1. How much warning did they get before the tsumani hit?

2. What would the impact be if the plants all melted down?

The first waves struck Sendai about 10 to 15 minutes after the Quake. The Tsunami warning itself went off while the ground was still shaking so within 5 minutes of the first jolt.

Even if all the reactors melt down, which they probably will, it won't be like the catastrophe that occurred with Chernobyl. It will be worse than our own Three Mile Island which is still bad but I doubt there will be an exclusion zone encompassing hundreds of square miles of land lasting for years like they had in Russia.

We're conditioned at a young age to feel guilt regarding the plight of black people (slavery, starving kids in Ethiopia, etc.), not so much with every one else.

They DID step forward for the tsunami in Indonesia though..... so what? They think the Japanese are too rich to help? In that case, no one should help our country then, when we have a Katrina type event I guess. Hurting people are hurting people. Sad they have an outlook like that if this is true.

Billy Sheehan's facebook status on the weekend.....

Have heard from many, many friends in Japan. So glad they are ok, but things are tough over there. Thankfully the worst is over. Watching the news closely. Hoping for things to settle down there. Working on what to do to help......

They are supposed to start there Japan tour in 3 weeks? :?

We just blackballed the Japanese over the Toyota recall issue which, when after all the U.S. investigations were done found the problems to be not with the cars but with the drivers themselves. Of course the results were announced in a very low key manner and the damage to Toyota had already been done so why should a lack of American empathy in this situation be any surprise?

I do it for two reasons: It'll look good on my resumé, and big catastrophes like this always needs medical aid.

Don't be an asshole. This is without a doubt, one of the greatest natural disasters in a long time. These people need help.

As it should be ...here's something

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/cel ... PNheadline

While many celebrities sent prayers and dollars to Japan in the wake of Friday's deadly earthquake and tsunami and urged their fans to do the same, one responded to the crisis by cracking a couple of ill-advised jokes.

"Wave will hit 8am them crazy white boys gonna try to go surfing," rapper 50 Cent tweeted Friday morning. That afternoon, 50 (real name: Curtis Jackson) added, "Look this is very serious people I had to evacuate all my hoe's from LA, Hawaii and Japan. I had to do it. Lol."
The rapper seemed to come to his senses minutes later, writing, "Nah this is nuts but what can anyone do about it. Let's pray for anyone who has lost someone." He then compared the natural disaster to a movie and said that "hate it or love it," "some of my tweets are ignorant I do it for shock value."

But celebrities haven't raised the rallying cry that they did after 2010's Haiti earthquake and 2005's Hurricane Katrina. As of Monday morning, no plans for a benefit concert, telethon, or similar fundraising event had been reported. When ABCNews.com asked representatives for Sean Penn if the Oscar-winning actor, who quickly latched on to relief efforts in Haiti and New Olreans, planned to do anything for Japan, they responded, "Mr. Penn continues to participate in relief efforts in Haiti."

So far, the extent of stars' efforts has been beseeching their Twitter followers to donate to organizations like the Red Cross.

Do you think all is not truly forgiven, even though an ally, after WWII? My 11 year old daughter, who is the overly caring type normally. Normally emotional, about everything, asked me why our country is helping them, when they bombed Pearl Harbor. Because I guess they had learned about it in school. Which I explained it all to her. Not to mention the fact there are probably more Japanese in Hawaii now, than Americans or native Hawaiins. But I wonder, is this an American mentality in the adult world too? Or are there other reasons? Because it's not like they don't help any Asians. Look at Indonesia.

I think it's more of an economic thing from the 80s where a lot of our economic woes were being blamed on the imbalance in trade with Japan. Even though the Japanese economy has been stagnant the last 20 years, they still made for a convenient whipping boy when our automakers were in trouble a few years back. There is probably a strong census here that the Japanese have enough money to take care of themselves so why should we help them.

If anything, the Japanese should hate your fucking guts. Sure, they bombed Pearl Harbor. What you guys did was taking it to a whole new level. Fatman over Hiroshima and as well as a nuclear bomb over Nagasaki and not to mention the bombings of Tokyo. It did win the pacific wars though, but the bombings was a gay move.

Yeah, but tell that to some old WWII vets! They may have been forced to forgive in some cases, but they didn't forget. And i get war. Who is our friend one day are of course our enemies another day, and the other way around. I just wondered if there could still be some prejudices. That's all. I mean my grandfather fought them in the Philipines and then after was stationed in Japan, right after they surrendered. I can tell you ally or not, he did not care for them. They trained them to HATE them during the war. I just wonder if people still carry around old sentiments is all.

Don, you're probably right. I think we have this image of them having wealth. But their economy has the same problems as our own. And we'd need the help too with such a huge event. Which is WHY our government will help. Strange Hollywood sees it differently. And Parfait, STFU already. Now that we know the REAL reason you help, your resume. Japan attacked us UNPROVOKED! They are lucky that's all we did. They would not stop that war and surrender until then. It's in their culture not to surrender. Something you culturally are ignorant to understand, for obvious reasons.

The Japanese will recover from this whether we help them or not. Their economy will be down for a few months but once reconstruction starts, they'll rebound. I think Japan will think twice about all the Aid money they have been doling out abroad over the years, which I won't blame them for at all. I also expect to see their military increase a bit after this too as being a pacifist country using money as security blanket is no longer the end all it once was.

Exactly, and people getting all chicken little about this over here because of the media hype is a little ridiculous when they are dealing with what they are dealing with over there.

It's VERY obvious they are a strong people! They have that on their side. I have no doubt they can do it. I bet better than we could here! With how some Americans just expect hand outs and to have the government fix everything.

Yep. I lived in Japan and they are people who can and do take care of themselves just fine. Their reactions and actions from all this will put to absolute shame the reactions and actions of people after Katrina, and what Japan is dealing with is beyond a million times worse than Katrina was.

I get that. The whole soldier thing - man vs man. But it's not that funny or easy when you see kids having their legs thorn off or women getting raped to death, because some morons with poorly fitting suits and big ties, think war is a necessity. It always hurts the civilians the most.

Not unlike this, where most of the hit has been on poor people, who don't have the money or means to secure their buildings e.g.
