Listening to that clip it's quite easy to figure out why Journey told Kevin Shirley to go blow a goat. This David Kalmusky guy actually knows how to stack vocals and utilize technology. The sonic sounds excellent.

This is where you lose me. Revelation was the exact same thing as Infinity-Escape....but that was ok. What's the difference? That stuff was sonically ok, taking into consideration the current technology of the time.....but suddenly Revelation wasn't? :?

And, boy, was he sour grapes a couple of times in his interview with Andrew. I was worried about the album, as he wasn't exactly shouting its greatness from the rooftops, focusing more on the disagreements between Neal and Jon, but then I realized his ego was involved in them going elsewhere, and that's what the attitude was about, not the quality of the music.

The day I heard the Revelation songs live I knew he did a shit job ... and said as much. The songs were flat and the instruments sounded dead. I think it was too compressed and it lost much of the original creativity. Escape is a great record, but it's certainly not because of the production job. It's not bad, but it's not great. The clip sounded much fuller and more powerful ... kinda like Frontiers.

I think Shirley had a part in the mixing too, they were all sending Mixes back and forth from what I read, and Kevin was contributing input from the producers chair.

However it was actually done??? from the little bit I can hear, it sounds like an incredible, big, extremely well mixed rock album, really blowing the doors (As I've posted in other posts), off of other, current albums in my iTunes - it's not just a great sounding mix for Journey.... it's a great sounding track for "Rock music" in general, it finally sits with journey melodies, playing, and style / Sound, but it competes and kicks in a Modern sense. Not just Neals Guitars, but Cain's Keys, The Background vocals, Arnel is out of this world, Neal sounds as big as he does Live.... Maybe bigger. Maybe they should take that Kalmusky guy on the road with them to mix the shows ;) But have Ross's Bass and Deen's drums EVER sounded so good on recording??? not close -

Don't meant to gush, I will remind you I was BASHING the new stuff out of the gate, AND the clip when I heard it on my Laptop Speakers, without a fair reference.

It's when the clip came on, on Shuffle, days later, in my iTunes Library fed Stereo at work, that it sounded like some magic little gremlin walked over, and WAY dialed in my iTunes, and cranked it up a bit, kicked the whole thing alive. Something else came on after it, and my stereo actually sounded "Broken" in comparison.

I gotta believe that's Neal, and Cain, getting what "THEY" want in the Mix room, and they, from listening to this, and the last few records in comparison, DEFINITELY need to mix their own records with this guy. They GOT the Vocals, BGV's, Huge Guitars Keys, Drums, kicking ass aggressively, and you can hear everything.

Good job on the clip !! ANDREW.... LETS HERE MORE!!!

I'll admit, the first time I heard "City of Hope" I wasn't too impressed (though "Resonate" and "Chain of Love" both were instant faves). But CoH started to grow on me, and based from what I've heard on the 30 sec sample, I'm gonna like it a lot.

Well some of us DO. lol

I like it so far. Some parts of the keys sound a teensy bit overdone to me, but sounds like a good song so far.

They are, per Neal or Jon from a recent interview. Apparently Kevin Elson is out.

Neal is on record somewhere as being disappointed with the drum sound as recorded by Kevin Shirley (Arrival and/or Revelations) although they sounded great in the room at the time.

Mediocre?!? Those 2 albums were absolute trash. Women could have used any clip off of either album as a fucking rape whistle.

And, Revelation was no better....just as mediocre with nothing new or unique or interesting....just a modern reflection of nostalgia for DSB and the Escape/Frontier years.

So, with two mediocre albums, and one half-baked EP, I don't see why expecting a ;'fart' for Eclipse is that unreasonable.

I'll wait to judge until I hear it...but, some of you people are way over-hyping it.

I have to slightly disagree about Revelation...Aside from the "paint by numbers" opening track, there is some good stuff on there.

Did you pack your "angry eyes"? :)

You're going to make someone angry... and you wouldn't want to see him when he's angry.

I believe Kalumsky has reccomended a guy to take on the road with them. Kalumsky helped with the first night or so.

I'd be surprised. I know Jason Bonham and other drumers have gushed over Kevin's typical treatment of drum tracks. I thought Deen himself was blown away by sound from one of sessions. Could be wrong, but I thought I read that. Anyway, I love the Caveman's typical recording and production style. But he definitely has an approach that is not loved by all. I've read enough critiques to recognize that it's not for everyone. And with the complexity of these sessions, it sounds like the mixes required someone who could devote a lot of time and effort to get them right, and Kevin just didn't have that time (or energy?). Looking forward to listening to these tunes on more than just my little JBL computer speakers.

I see...I don't know if I misread or just haven't heard the latest. I suppose it makes sense he would be working the studio rather than be on the road the biggest part of two years. So what happened with Elson? Did he commit to someone else since Journey had a year off or did they just decide to make a change?

No idea. Elson was an integral part of the Journey family for awhile. As for Kalumsky not going on the road....I read that on here. I'll see if I can dig it up.
