Greg wrote:Trial By Fire was a very nice release. It was exactly what the record companies were wanting from a Journey reunion album, and it delivered just that. It would have been super huge if the band got to tour behind it, but it's still very much more commercially successful than anything else Journey has put out since that album. I would have loved more rockers on it. And I certainly agree that "I Can See It In Your Eyes" should have been on the US version of the album, but it was anything but boring in my opinion. I certainly don't believe it was a perfect album by a long shot, but I enjoyed it. In fact, I probably have grown to like the album more now, 15 years later, than when I first got it. I can't say that about any other albums Journey has released since the 90's.
As far as Perry's voice goes, I liked it much more so from Frontiers and on than what I did before that album. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Escape, but the Frontiers album is where I really got into this band and Perry's vocals. So, his vocals on TBF didn't sound damaged to me at all. It sounded matured, yeah. But, I happened to really enjoy the more mature sound. He still hit some nice notes on the album, and it was beautifully done.
I loved his voice, too ...
But I also loved the high~pitched ~soulful~motown~
you can
practically see the Spinners spinning voice, all the changes in between up to and
including TBF ...you can damage a chord, but you can't buy soul or emotion and deliver
it like some singers are able to ...regardless of the range ... high~medium~low
he delivered!! Perhaps one has to have soul to understand!!
