I think Arnel internalizes the lyrics and emotes just fine. Would be nice if he has a little rough edge and late-Perry rasp going on, but he sounds more like young Perry. Awesome performance either way. Can't imagine Perry, Chalfant, or anyone else hitting alot of these soaring highs.
I think He did a lot better this go round ...I'm w/AR,
he's still not there ...and that's not even comparing him, as some like to do^^^^
...I mean in general ... period!! SAM is so good, though!!

Yeah, it's just not there for me either. And the irony is that he might have the strongest voice yet. I really want to like AP, but it's as if he was simply promoted from the chorus line. He comes across as an actor trying hard to be sincere. I struggle with picking up the natural ability to sing to just one person. Hard to explain, but the truly great singers can be in front of thousands, and everyone there feels as if they're the only one there.

yup. Most boring Journey album ever. There are a few great songs there, but most of it Perry getting his lounge on. "When You Love A Woman" IS a brilliant song for sure. "I Can See It In Your Eyes" should've been on the US version. Great tune. "Easy to Fall" is also brilliant in spite of the fact that it rips off "Sweet and Simple". The rest of the album does nothing for me, especially "Trial By Fire" and "Just the Rain". Those songs go absolutely nowhere. But yeah, the gals like those two.
Not to mention, Steve's voice on that album is incredibly damaged. It's tough and sad for me to listen to. "Damaged" does not equal "Emotion" by the way. A damaged voice is a damaged voice.

Trial By Fire was a very nice release. It was exactly what the record companies were wanting from a Journey reunion album, and it delivered just that. It would have been super huge if the band got to tour behind it, but it's still very much more commercially successful than anything else Journey has put out since that album. I would have loved more rockers on it. And I certainly agree that "I Can See It In Your Eyes" should have been on the US version of the album, but it was anything but boring in my opinion. I certainly don't believe it was a perfect album by a long shot, but I enjoyed it. In fact, I probably have grown to like the album more now, 15 years later, than when I first got it. I can't say that about any other albums Journey has released since the 90's.

As far as Perry's voice goes, I liked it much more so from Frontiers and on than what I did before that album. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Escape, but the Frontiers album is where I really got into this band and Perry's vocals. So, his vocals on TBF didn't sound damaged to me at all. It sounded matured, yeah. But, I happened to really enjoy the more mature sound. He still hit some nice notes on the album, and it was beautifully done.

I loved his voice, too ...
But I also loved the high~pitched ~soulful~motown~you can
practically see the Spinners spinning
voice, all the changes in between up to and
including TBF ...you can damage a chord, but you can't buy soul or emotion and deliver
it like some singers are able to ...regardless of the range ... high~medium~low
he delivered!! Perhaps one has to have soul to understand!!

I was never a Trial By Fire fan but after revisiting it while first listening to Eclipse, I appreciate it much more. Now that I've given it a decent chance,I find that I like it more than Eclipse or Arrival.

If TBF had been cut down to 11 songs, this would've been a great CD. Still very good but could have been better if they eliminated some of the sappier ballads.

I've never subscribed to the argument of having too many songs.
If need be, just program your player to skip over the unwanted tracks (even my old Onkyo laser disc player had that capability back in the 80s).
If you rip everything for portable use anyway, you just omit what you don't want.

Replace one ballad with "I Can See It In Your Eyes" and change that repetitive guitar riff on the backside of Castle's Burning to something more interesting and I think it would have been enough of a rock album to have satisfied everybody.

When I did this to Eclipse, I ended up with 5 songs.

As long as it's not Easy To Fall, IMO one of their best. :)

I used to hate that song until I found out it was a song Perry had written about his mother. It just didn't work for me as a bland love song until it took on another meaning.

It's not my favorite song, but I don't hate it. I love the moodiness of "Rain" and "TBF".

I especially love the title track. Neal's playing on those two tracks is so good and smooth and fits the songs perfectly.

TBF:

Message of Love
One More
When You Love A Woman
If He Should Break Your Heart
Forever In Blue
Still She Cries
Colors of the Spirit
Easy to Fall
Can't Tame the Lion
I Can See It In Your Eyes
Trial By Fire

Arrival:

Higher Place
All the Way
Signs of Life
Loved By You
Livin' To Do
World Gone Wild
I Got A Reason
Live And Breathe
Nothin' Comes Close
To Be Alive Again
Kiss Me Softly
We Will Meet Again

Generations:

Faith in the Heartland
State of Grace
The Place In Your Heart
A Better Life
Walking Away From the Edge
Every Generation
Out Of Harm's Way
The Time
I Can Breathe
Beyond the Clouds
Never Too Late

Revelation:

Never Walk Away
Change For the Better
Wildest Dream
Where Did I Lose Your Love
Let It Take You Back
After All These Years
Turn Down the World Tonight
What I Needed
What It Takes To Win
Like A Sunshower

Like these a lot - with the exception of generations - which I don't like as an album at all.

I would add "When I Think Of You" to TRIAL BY FIRE. That should have been a single. In fact, there were many singles on TBF....just nothing got released....

There are muliple levels of meanings on many of the songs on TBF, that is why it is a brilliant, if overlooked, album....

I absolutely subscribe to it. Over the last 20 years, bands have been putting songs on albums that otherwise wouldn't have been good enough to make the cut, filler tracks, for the most part. A lot of it is stuff that would suit a collector's edition release or something like that. Albums used to be a cohesive package of songs. That isn't often the case anymore.

Trial By Fire's good, the other two suck.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'
