maybe the best live recording of Journey since the Perry days. They were really in synch on this show, and it really shows the rock side of Journey. Just wish someone would go into the audio and fix some of the clipping issues--if possible.

What made the last show so popular was the way they jacked up the setlist with One More, Chain Reaction, Edge Of The Blade, etc.

Is there a recording there somewhere? I don't see it when I go to that link.

Only recording I have found so far, is a Youtube clip of DSB that was filmed from the screen of someone's monitor.
I'll spare ya.
Hopefully some better clips will be uploaded or the Graspop site will have it archived for viewing.

there are a couple of versions on youtube, and there have been some links posted around in the past for the full show.

edit: Let me clarify. I'm talking about the Revelation Graspop show. No idea on the "new" one, which appears there might be.

Besides two new songs, it looks like it was just the generic setlist this year.

Yup there's a link to watch the performance but I don't know if it works outside of Europe.

Yeah, it isn't the best clip but it seems to me the show in 2009 had a lot more excitement. Here, after the first dozen rows it seems the crowd wasn't quite as engaged.

Hunting persistently for a recorded version of the performance. Found an interview with Deen and Jon about it that can be watched here.

W H Y ? ? ?

Jon, Neal, Arnel, Deen, Ross--

MOST people that pay for downloads use ITUNES. PROMOTE THAT ECLIPSE IS THERE! (and AMAZON).
Seriously, they talk about DSB and how that's been great for iTunes users, but when they talk about Eclipse,
they only mention WalMart. ALSO- MANY people WILL NOT go into WalMart for political reasons.

They MUST have some kind of contractual thing where they can't mention the others. LAME.

As an aside, Deen's speaking voice sounds totally wrecked. Yikes.

Lame to be in the middle of the day. but the audience seems to like them enough- check the end of the tune -all hands appear to be up. The band sounds great too.

Yeah it does! And I don't want to be starting any rumors here but doesn't Deen look an awful lot like Gowan? Wait a sec.... maybe Deen and Gowan are the same person! Has anyone ever seen them together? :P

I wonder if Deen has an acting experience. I think he'd be great in a vampire movie. :P

There's no way Azoff would let that happen. I think these guys are just out of the loop. They might not even know how fast the album has been falling down the chart. They probably just heard about it debuting at 13 and that's it.

During the interview, Jon touched on Napster "stealing the album "Arrival" from us..."
I vaguely remember that topic being discussed in the BackTalk forum back around 2005 or thereabouts but I never really learned the whole story and what that was all about. I started coaching fulltime in 1999 and at the same time the Internet and PC boom was in full swing creating lots and lots of work and $$ for those of us who were building and fixing PC's at that time. That being the case, I found myself out of the loop on a lot of things and in some cases wouldn't learn about them until weeks after the events (Johnny Carson dying for example. I learned about it 2 weeks after it happened!)

Anyway, if someone would "nutshell" what happened with Arrival and Napster or point me to a link where I can read it for myself, I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Agreed. Azoff is way too smart and shrewd to ever sign THAT contract.

Napster did not steal anything. It was a peer to peer transfer client, much like torrent sites. File sharing
can become so huge that people won't bother to go buy music they can download for free.

Ahhhh OK. I see. He's using the name Napster to mean P2P file sharing in whatever form, transfer client, etc. was being used by those who were downloading it. Gotcha! I'm very familiar with file sharing and its many forms but the way he so factually named Napster, I thought maybe the guy who started Napster and was ultimately personally tried by the feds and the RIAA for copyright infringements somehow had gotten a hold of Arrival prior to its release, etc. etc. etc.

Thanks!

When Napster first blew up, it was most European music that was getting nabbed. I don't buy into it that Napster ruined Arrival's sales. There were a few people that grabbed the album and became so vocal about it that it was assumed that there were hundreds of thousands of people downloading it and that's just not very likely. A lot of people were still using dial up then and as I just said, there were the more popular pop and dance genres getting hit with the majority of downloads.

LMAO @ Deen at the very end of the interview. The interviewer asks if the band will come back and play a full show for them and Deen confidently and authoritatively says, "Absolutely. You tell us when and where and we'll be there. Guarantee it!" And as soon as he said it you could see the wheels in his mind spinning as he thought to himself, "Shit! Did I really just say that?? Neal's gonna kill me for making a statement like that!"

You honestly believe that the 2009 Graspop show was that good? I thought it was an average performance and sounded awful.
May i suggest you track down the Bilbao, Spain dvd from the same tour. It is THE best recording and performance by this era of the band. Puts the official stuff on dvd to shame. Superb.

haven't heard the Bilbao dvd, but yes, I think Graspop was that good. Very clipped recording (meaning poor sound quality despite being soundboard), but the band sounded VERY good on that one. Wouldn't surprise me if the Bilbao would beat the dvd. Neither one are anywhere close to perfect.

If the last Graspop festival show could have been cleaned-up (at least the one that we heard), or another copy found, then maybe that show should have been included in the Euro album as a 2nd disc. No doubt it would have helped sales.

Arrival came out in Europe first, and people downloaded the thing in the US, because they were curious and didn't want to wait. Then, they either didn't like it and didn't buy it, or they were happy with being scum and just kept the free download. I admit I downloaded the thing, but I also bought it when it finally came out in the US.

it's more than that. Arrival was leaked on Napster well before the Japan release date, in rather poor quality and missing a few songs, but leaked nonetheless. It was very ballad-ridden at that point with very few rock tracks. Very poor word-of-mouth followed. Then, it came out in Japan about 6 MONTHS before the US release. Huge uproar about the lack of rock songs followed. End result is that one of the tracks destined for the US release (I'm Not That Way) became the Japan bonus track. An edited version of To Be Alive Again (the original Japan bonus track) was left on the US release, and a couple of new songs were added to the album.

The end result is that regardless of what the issue was (the Napster leak, the bad press from the Napster leak, the 6-Month Japan advance, the lack of publicity from Sony), the album got very little promotion and didn't sell very well. My guess is that neither single issue was a killer on its own (give me a break, the majority of the Journey fanbase which was NOT teenage/college aged didn't even know what Napster was, much less downloaded anything from it, ), but combined it was a perfect storm.
