If you have a guy playing a part offstage, what is it going to hurt to just put him in a corner on the stage with the other musicians? People realize that some bands may have an extra musician on stage for some things. It's not that big of a deal.
Thin Lizzy had no problem putting Darren Wharton on a riser next to Brian Downey's kit.
Geoff Nicholls was also onstage with Sabbath. Off to the side, but still ON the stage.
Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe aka ABWH also had the 2nd keyboarder (Matt Clifford) and guitarist (fergit his name) onstage with them. Matt filled out the sound while Wakey wailed away like a mofo.
Ask Van Halen why they never made Alan Fitzgerald visible.
The same reason why Tony Kaye had an offstage backup for the 90125 and Big Generator tours: they didn't want to "explain" him. Except in Kaye's case, everyone knows he's the worst keyboardist Yes ever had. I'm not saying he outright sucked, but he's not up to Wakeman's, Moraz's, Koroshev's or even Downes's level. It's just the way it is. On the Union tour Tony's "solo" was some little wimpy right-hand noodling, while Rick's was an unbelievably display of technical prowess, but still far away better than the kind of wanking Jordan Rudess does nowadays.
So ya gonna PM me or what?
