Vicious as far as Superman. He'll take action at a much higher risk. Superman the character won't be brooding like Batman, but what will be going on around him will be much more darker to a sometimes florescent character. Going to make for an interesting screening.

I'm not much of a comic reader, but I know enough about Superman to understand that his optimism and general idealism are integral to his character. I don't mind making him morally fallible (heroes who don't slip up aren't interesting), but I hope Nolan and co. don't succumb to the emo-drenched masses and indulge this overused trope.

Cavill mentioned numerous times that his Superman and the script that asks from Cavill will follow the standard and legacy of the Superman character and will abide by that character by all means. Superman is Superman, you can't change that. He's going to be a bright character at heart in midst of a more intense crisis around him. Last movie we had Superman weeping and looking through windows and getting his abrupt ass-kicked in the only major fight scene. It's about time we see a Superman movie explore the un-touched possibilities that was never met with the character. ACTION and good story.

Don't they know by now that Superman vs. Doomsday is the next story they should film? They made an animated film, but it needs the live action treatment.

Luthor and Zod once again?

Why are they avoiding characters like Brainiac, Bizarro, Doomsday?

Just make the fuckin' Justice League movie already. Avengers is going to be out next year. Get a clue, people!

I have a feeling we'll be seeing un-announced characters appear in the film, like a Metallo or Bizzaro. Nolan LOVES uses multiple characters in his hero films and he's overseeing this project more-so than what people think.

I think they need to set Superman up first for the audience to recognize a new movement on the characters part. As long as the the story and plot is very solid and we get the performances from an A+ cast in the making, then I can see some major battles and different stories formed for a second blockbuster with characters such as Braniac and Doomsday. Those are complex characters that need to be more identifiable so starting off with a Brainiac wouldn't fit into a Superman story re-introducing him. Besides, Doomsday KILLED Superman. This is Superman's REAL return.

I've seen quite a few less-than-positive remarks regarding Cavill, his hair (no bang—LOL), and yes, the texture of the suit and the fake-looking "S"...

That said, the cape is good and it's still better than the costume Routh wore. And I believe Cavill is not wearing the famous red trunks, though you can't really tell from the photo.

Trav, thanks very much for the high-res picture! I agree on the fabric - updating standard spandex I can understand, but the styles of texturing they are doing is getting old and predictable. I agree, this is an improvement over the Routh costume, 2 weaknesses being the too-dark colors (which actually make it look like the Evil Superman from "Superman III"), and the small "S" emblem. I remember them asking Singer about that in an interview when the first photos of Routh came out, and he said something like "You don't want to go wild with the S too much". Well, for him, not wild enough. And I never liked the raised plasticky look, which this one seems to have too.

I'm actually not convinced this is an actually photo (or totally one anyway) - looks like it's the work of an artist. Yes, they'll need to do much better, especially with the hair. But I hold out faith - I remember the first shots of Jason Momoa as Conan not being that impressive, but from the previews it appears they've done a wonderful job of turning him into Conan.

There have been several new photos and "first looks" out in just the past week. Better shots of the Captain America costume from "The Avengers", and Bane in full costume / Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle from "The Dark Knight Rises".

Hell yeah man, that HIGH RES pic is my desktop background, haha.

They've JUST started shooting Man of Steel so everything is still in the infancy stage. I like how they threw the fans a bone. I know I've been waiting patiently for the first teaser but didn't expect it to be THIS early since MOS isn't coming out until June of 2013 so that leaves 2 years worth of fixes the milks and crannies and tightening things up, which makes me feel very confident that this will be turned into a masterpiece.

This is a teaser pic. The entire suite isn't even fully shown (Ex. trunks) so I'm sure there will be many leaks in the filming process. No need to worry about the hair, Cavill has been seen walking around with the spit curl and owning the "Super-doo." I mean, fuck, ANYTHING is better than Routh's bullshit. They had a damn clip on for the curl! So bad.

I think I saw a "miscast" post. That's far from the case. Super-fans have been longing for Henry Cavill. In fact, he was supposed to play the role 2 times. The first time was that he was the initial choice for Superman in Superman Returns but once Singer took over the entire ship, he wanted a Reeve look-alike and scrapped Cavill. Then Cavill was supposed to be Superman in the Justice League movie (he was also in the running for Batman, but they went with the more experienced Bale) that was scrapped years ago. Now, his calling finally came. Superman fans are loving HC got the job.

That is a long ass time to try and keep people interested in Superman while we get the third Batfilm from Nolan, the Spidey reboot, and Avengers. The third Iron Man movie will come out in 2013. Same for the Thor sequel, I think. This isn't the 80s when quality superhero films were few and far between. I remember how blown away I was by the theatrical preview for Superman II. I don't think I'll ever get that effect from a preview for a Superman movie again. I did get that from the Dark Knight trailer, but that was a win-win all around and everybody already knew it.

They have? Where are you reading this? What's funny is that he does have more of a "Bruce Wayne" look to him than Clark in that pic. Must be his stare.

He certainly does. Best guy to ever happen to a superhero film. I don't think we'll get Bizarro, but they'd better include more than the timeworn Luthor/Phantom Zone villains scheme. And please, no kryptonite shivs.

I was merely thinking aloud. No, this won't be a Doomsday movie (yes, I know he killed Superman—I remember all the hoopla and the unfortunate subsequent series of events that reintroduced Supes to the DCU). But they need to up the ante hardcore in the wake of Nolan's Batman movies, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, etc., etc. I know you love Supes, but in this day and age he is a rather vanilla character. The Green Lantern movie should've been a whopper but they changed the ending and had the characters do things they wouldn't have done in the comics. GL is a character with massive potential and he and the GL Corps have a multitude of stories they could've drawn from for the first movie. Supes is basically "God" with only one primary weakness. The fewer limitations a character has, the less interesting s/he is, and vice versa. That's why Batman remains DC's most popular character.

I'm a fanboy to the highest degree. Not like most hardcore fans, some go insane but I consider myself a diehard. I've been apart of multiple communities like Melodic when it comes to Superman and the Cavill signing has the entire fanbase excited anywhere you look.

As far as Cavill's appearance, I think people weigh too much in on the Christopher Reeve look and determine what Superman SHOULD look like. Truth of the matter is, is that Superman has went through many faces and changes since his 1938 release but it was Reeve who brought commercial success to the big film so people automatically think Superman should look like Reeve when that isn't the case at all. I'm glad Cavill brings in a different look. A new era of Superman needs to be determined and I think Henry Cavill has a very nice look to him to pull it off with ease and not be a Christopher Reeve clone. Got to make it his own. One of the many reasons Brandon Routh failed so hard. Fans got to let the Reeve era live in its own infamy and let it be.

Good post. I agree with everything you said. I'm a huge Supes fan but it's pretty obvious how a character like Batman can have such success. It's easy to write a character like Bruce Wayne who turns into the Bat at night. Orphan child who witnessed his parents murder. Billionaire out for revenge on the dark streets of the highly crimed profile of Gotham City. Womanizer. Mysterious detective who hides in the shadows. There are so many directions you can go to write a character like Batman and it's fun. Batman has room to explore his flaws. Superman is a territory most writers are scared to change.

Superman is a standard of hope and Batman was created to be everything Superman was not in his dark demeanor.

Supes has major continuity to worry about over 75 years. Writers need to walk a fine-line to what include from the many era's of the Superman story and live in fear of those issues. There's so much more to Superman than what people think. Even though he's so powerful there are many flaws to his character that needs to be explored. Unfortunately, writers stay away from the "don't fix what's not broken" attitude towards Superman & it hurts the character in many ways and he comes off bland to the human eye.

We need a writer with BALLS to tackle Superman and if that happens, then I don't see why Superman can't be the hero he once was when he first started out in the Golden Age. No matter what, Superman is the standard other hero's live up to. The ending result is always the same argument: Can he/she beat Superman?

So I read today that LAWRENCE FISHBURNE has been cast to play PERRY WHITE! First HORRIBLE casting choice that I've read about the film so far. Wonderful actor, wrong choice for a role that shouldn't be redefined. YJ, what do you think?

Which became boring a long time ago. A being that amazingly powerful should only concern himself with cosmic matters, like the GL Corps. Let the, uh, "less powerful" heroes handle things on Earth, since the guy with the red trunks and bang curl can supposedly juggle moons like a circus performer.

Superman Returns wasn't a re-make. It was a sequel from Superman II, which was the problem. This new Super-remake is actually going to see something we've never seen of the Man of Steel before--EVER. He's going to be more vicious and suited for a more modern audience which means more action and serious than what is expected from the character.

To be honest I couldn't give 2 shits about Superman or most of these other lame ass movies re-treding the boards. All these movies are trying to out do each other in "darkness" and "mood" and blah blah blah...

I have faith in this casting process and will never judge a casting call until the final product is out on film. You never know what the director has in mind when selecting their cast so this could be following suite. There are a lot of fans that questioned the call to have a black man play White but I think that's just another step forward into redefining the Super-franchise and making such a bold move for that character speaks volumes in what they want in their film. If he could come off as Perry White and have the necessary aggression the character was always known for then I don't see a problem with it.

Dean Cain? I really don't want to go forward with this reply but I will anyway. Comparing Cavill to Cain is ludicrous but I suppose you made your personal point with that awful comparison. Henry Cavill was offered the job for Superman 2 times throughout this decade and was actually penciled in AS Superman until new director issues (Singer) and over-all production of the Justice League movie fell through. In Hollywood, you don't get offered the job 2 times for a role and not look the part! Fortunately, 3rd time was the charm.

Dean Cain, lmao.

And at one point Nicolas Cage was gonna slap on the blue tights for Tim Burton. Who cares?

Re-read your statement over again and then try to re-type it. I'll give you two key words to look upon when doing so: TIM BURTON. Burton's film wasn't the Superman story we are all familiar with. Burton wanted to do a whack job, "Y2K" type Superman that had nothing to do with anything other than being a sci-fi flick with very weird glow in the dark costumes and such. That was quickly trashed upon and dumped for the most obvious reasons.

I got a different consensus about Routh & shared the same majority feeling as soon as that shitty ass, first announcement and pic of him as Superman was released. Everywhere I've read over the years on fan-forums, the fanbase was ecstatic about the re-boot and how the first order of business was to get rid of Routh. BR had no chance. He was bland, boring, stale, lacked personality and looked like he was 15 years old that resembled Christopher Reeve.

He literally looks like a babydoll. :x

From what I understand, David Goyer's script isn't your traditional Supes origin story either. I actually think the Burton version would've been solid. Burton was still able to deliver at that point in his career, but he has totally lost it now. His dark carnival interpretation of Batman, while sacrilegious to DC comic fans, was truly something to behold back in the 90s. Wish your fanboy enthusiasm about this project was catching, sadly with Goyer (Blade 3) writing and Snyder directing, I have little faith. Cavill still barely looks the part. And before you once again declare yourself the self-appointed spokesperson for the Superman fan world community, let me just say that I’ve been a fan of the character for years. Not sure what sites you read, but most film sites I'm on (like AICN) seem to think Routh got a bad deal and had the goods.

Excepting a few bits & chunks, the script for Superman Returns was like a neutered bull. Superman, Jr. was a bad joke. Spacey's Luthor was his take on Hackman's Luthor. The kryptonite island/mountain was pretty, nice FX, but not what the audience was hoping for in a finale/showdown. The script was too much a retread of events seen before and new drama intended to (hopefully) appeal to the broadest audience possible.

And that's why the movie failed. Not because of Routh. There was no real supervillain, there was the laughable premise of Superman bailing on Earth for six years, and then we had a respected actor playing a role previously played by another respected actor, who did it better.

Lois was badly miscast and the kid was a dumb idea. Luthor had very little to do, but the arc of a villian is one of the hardest things to nail in this sort of film, and very few superhero movies get it right. Tonally, I thought they really channeled the old Donner movies and while it needed more action, it had quite a few showstopping scenes. Personally, I enjoyed the hell out of it. But it was def. an old school film, and not a Matrixy edgy upgrade. Speaking of which, weren't the Wachowski's supposed to bring back Supes with Keanu possibly? I know JJ Abrams at one point was gonna do it with Brendan Fraser. Anyway, I'd love to see this franchise back one way or another.

Might want to have a look around. You're posting on a Journey msg board instead of going balls deep inside a real live woman. It's a fairly safe bet you're uncool.

The script hasn't been publicized and was still in the early process of clean-up so it could still be a work in progress and it's bound to change here or there with the movie being released in 2013. As far as rumors in where the script might be going, it's actually a combination of Superman: Birthright; Superman: Secret Origin and maybe some elements in Superman: Earth One, all origin stories that we are all familiar of. Over the decades, Superman has been as traditional as it comes so it'll ring true to being traditional.

Even Cavill has said that everything will seem VERY familiar and his Superman will be straight up Superman and it'll stay true to the Superman character but it will include minor changes with a larger script.

Here's a cool interview:

And before you once again declare yourself the self-appointed spokesperson for the Superman fan world community, let me just say that I’ve been a fan of the character for years. I'm not really declaring anything, just coming with my .2cents. Just relaying what the majority of fans have been saying over the years and I've been following forums as long as I can remember. Sure we have the Routh supporters who think he deserved another chance but that wouldn't make any sense since a re-boot is a re-boot and DC and Warner obviously wanted to have no ties to Superman Returns so what would be the point of having Routh? As soon as you'd see Routh, you'd be led to believe it was a sequel and not a re-boot and that's what I've always on fan-boy communities.

Travis, the visual that's springing to mind about you belies what I've actually heard: Aren't you linebacker-sized and sporting a shitton of tattoos?
