I see a diversion from the truth here, be it consciously or subconsciously. Regardless, people "care" about them because they were blaring over radio waves and car stereos during proms, stints in the back seat, roller rinks, after high school football games, friend's houses and every other imaginable outlet. There's an association to these songs, and that association is probably, for most, our youth, and these songs take us back to a better, more youthful time.

Again, you're comparing different times, especially over the radio waves. If kids today were allowed to hear current Journey all over the radio and during their defining years, I'm quite sure that 20-30 years down the road they'd feel just the same way (he he) that you and many others do about the 80's incarnation. But the cold hard fact remains that the music scene is completely different, and what they'll remember 20-30 years from now is what's being played over those radio waves, at proms, social events and through car stereos
now.
