And this really drives home the point that Steve doesn't do anything because he doesn't fucking have to. This is really a pretty amazing phenomenon, when you think about it.

How's the Neal/Arnel interview coming along?

What's amazing about it? If I made half the money any of these guys made, I wouldn't be working myself. I'd be enjoying my life and doing the things that I wanted to do. :)

Ah, the cash grab. Well, if it gets people to realize there's more to the band than Don't Stop Believin', it will have been a good move.

Love Perry, Hate Perry....it really makes no difference - what you still HEAR coming out on the radio waves (whether it be your local or satellite) is the Perry fronted Journey. Oh sure, maybe you'll hear a track off of Eclipse on Satellite, but for most of the listening public, Journey is synonomous with Perry's voice.

But in all reality, what other band from the 80s still has the fan base to even CARE? Heck, most of the 80s bands we can't even remember who they were, much less still having debates about what's better.

The fact remains that Journey still exists, and it is up to us as fans to decide which incarnation of the band we prefer. The fact they made music we still love today speaks volumes for what was...whether we will still care in another 20 years reamins to be seen, but like it or not, a legacy exists, and there are only a handful of bands that have created one (Stones, Zeppelin, Beatles).

Do I already have all the tunes on the upcoming G2 - yes...will I buy the GH2 yes...why??? Those songs stand the test of time, something that the Augeri, JSS or Pineda era Journey have yet to do...

While it's nice to see Rolie get some props, the second half of GH II is decidedly boring. At the very least MOL should be on there. Sony has treated 'Arrival' as the illegit bastard stepspawn of "real" Journey since its release. Shame.

You're comparing apricots to testicles here, really. The aforementioned songs had a chance to stand the test of time. The radio friendly 80's simply cannot be compared to today's scene. And if you need proof just grab the Billboard Top 100, and I'm sure you'll see what I mean. Now, that's not to say that most of the songs on GH Hits 2 aren't great, because most of them are. But to expect Remember Me, After All These Years, Never Walk Away or Anything Is Possible to tear up the Billboard chart is like expecting Corey Haim to star in Lost Boys 3.

Enough with the song selections. We've all heard them, we all have them.

I'm wondering if they've done any special packaging with this, that may include never before seen photos, liner notes that are interesting, etc. I've always given props to the remastered packages, let's hope that something good comes of this too. Gotta give the fans a reason to buy something that they already have, multiple times over.

I wasn't talking about tearing up the charts, or comparing apricots to testicles...

What I said is that right now (August 17, 2011) the songs from the Perry-fronted Journey have stood the test of time because we CARE about them. It's the same as with anything we've cared about - old tv shows that we love that got cancelled because they didn't have great ratings doesn't mean they weren't great shows...the key word is CARE.

However, IMHO, I don't think any of the post Perry-era incarnations of the band are going to have the same level of CARING many years down the road. It's not saying they were/are bad, just that they won't have the same LEGACY behind them...

I see a diversion from the truth here, be it consciously or subconsciously. Regardless, people "care" about them because they were blaring over radio waves and car stereos during proms, stints in the back seat, roller rinks, after high school football games, friend's houses and every other imaginable outlet. There's an association to these songs, and that association is probably, for most, our youth, and these songs take us back to a better, more youthful time.

Again, you're comparing different times, especially over the radio waves. If kids today were allowed to hear current Journey all over the radio and during their defining years, I'm quite sure that 20-30 years down the road they'd feel just the same way (he he) that you and many others do about the 80's incarnation. But the cold hard fact remains that the music scene is completely different, and what they'll remember 20-30 years from now is what's being played over those radio waves, at proms, social events and through car stereos now.

Exactly. The repeated playing of these songs on the radio back in the 80's is what got them into the average listener's head. And again today, it has everything to do with what songs are actually being played over and over on the radio.

Yeah, what they wil remember is what's being played over the radio waves, proms, social events or car stereos is 80s PERRY FRONTED JOURNEY...BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT IS BEING PLAYED, NOT LATER KAROAKECATURES OF THE BAND!!!

Some of us much prefer the post-perry music over a lot of the perry-era music.

You're fucking delusional if that's what you think is playing over today's radio waves, at proms and the other places I mentioned.

I kind of see what StElmoQn was saying. It is true that the Post Perry stuff won't stand the test of time, because nobody in 30 years is going to know anything about those songs unless by some miracle the radio stations start playing them as frequently as Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. Highly unlikely, certainly. Now, it's purely subjective as to if the quality of those Post Perry songs would stand the test of time if they were being played on radio, proms, etc... I think some would stand the test of time, some wouldn't. Just like any other artist.

Me, personally, I wouldn't have chosen a couple of those songs on the GH II. Most of them are definitely ones that should be on a GH album, but a few of them, probably not. Still part of that is the artists themselves choosing what songs will be on the CD, that artist being Steve Perry, and probably how well they did on the charts. Which still baffles me about the Trial By Fire song on there. I would think you'd put Message of Love or If He Should Break Your Heart since those songs were released to radio.

I would seriously doubt it. I believe this album is aimed more at those who have been buying the Greatest Hits over the last few years, not the diehards who have everything. Considering the majority of Greatest Hits purchases have been digital, it's just not a necessity to add in photos or extended liner notes with this release.
They didn't even waste money on the album art, this is purely a no frills cash-in brought on by the Greatest Hits' evergreen status on Billboard..

Anything NEVER before released by the band would probably require permission that I don't think Jon and Neal are ready to give. It's hard for them to block the other stuff as it has already been out there in the past and is really Sony's to do as they choose but stuff that has never seen the light of day is a different matter. I can't see Journey 2.0 going for that while they are still trying (unsuccessfully for the most part) to peddle Eclipse to the fans.

You are probably right. Neal and Jon likely have all that stuff locked away so they can use someday on a huge boxset that covers the band in its entirety upon their retirement, when they can and/or are willing to give all the incarnations of the band and the lead singers their due, and are not promoting the line-up or singer du jour.

Funny thing is....that song is better than ANY song off Eclipse. In fact, using your criteria posted above, no song off Eclipse is a hit - therefore not worthy of being included on any future GH package....

JC has a nice melody going on the song and he and Neal have a nice groove going at times, but it just doesn't go anywhere. I'll take Resonate, Chain Of Love and Anything Is Possible over that song. Actually, it would have made a great instrumental. Perry's voice just sounds terrible on that song when he tries to give the song a little oomph. And those layers of Perry around 2:30 sound awful.

Why? Judging from the comments around here there are enough fans daft enough to buy this without anything extra whatsoever...me doesn't get it at all - I don't even own the first GH anymore, I bought it years ago, it made me a fan, so eventually I had all the original albums and didn't need it anymore - and then I gave it to my Mum, who loves it and will never know the name of a single Journey album Perry-era or otherwise...
