I dont understand why folks are ripping apart something that they won't buy. This release is aimed at those 2 forty+ people, steaming up the windows after the Wantagh show...folks here have every song on this thing. Wait for the boxset...wait for Geraldo to uncover the vault. Quit micro-managing every move these plesiosaurs make.

I rather think that "Behind The Music" was what woke folks up to what Journey was all about. Before video, many people never knew what the guys even looked like unless you caught all their concerts. Someone watching BTM with me once said"I remember those songs. Is that what that singer looks like?" To a new-comer, watching Perry perforn is like having scales removed from your eyes when you thought you knew who all the great frontmen were.

There just has to be more coverage for ROR that is being kept under wraps for whatever reason. We all have some concert video's from it but the newer fans probably don't and the coverage of Perry singing, WCTNGOF would blow their minds. There is probably a wealth of material salted away, that may someday see the light of day which is probably why Perry does not feel the need to add more. I have not bought anything new in years as I have all the original 33's and Time 3 is the greatest listening pleasure. All the latest G.H. releases are fine for all the many new fans and so it's great that they are available to the fans in a timely manner.
PEACE!

Also see in other news, Andy Taylor is going to have a new solo album soon too. :D

 well...after all these years, we know who still "holds the keys", don't we?
A lot of early era songs...should make GR happy...
but, aw shucks, my favorite Journey song, WCTNGOF, got left out again. Don't believe it was on the Essential 2cd, either. Why, Steve, you were great on it????

There is a space out there that needs to be filled and Eclipse isn't doing it so why not capitalize on it if you're Sony? Was it all that long ago when Perry sent feelers about releasing some of the older stuff like DVDs and what not? The GH has to be nearing saturation, having something else to throw out there which won't cost Sony really any money to promote (Escape is proving that) is just smart business.

I agree with this, save one thing. They should have pulled a live version of DSB with Perry singing and thrown it on there as a bonus track.

I think Jon and Neal would have objected. All they need is some DJ playing that version and starting a trend. The band seems to have enough identity issues as it is.

Don makes a great point on this. Look, I think Arnel does a great on some songs (OTY, OA), but singing DSB is not his strong suit. If people start comparing the SP version with the AP rendition(s) currently being sang live now, well... Arnel comes across very poorly (imo).

I'm looking forward to "Journey's Greatest Hits Volume III" and in tiny parenthesis "the post-Perry years".

Allow me to expand on an earlier point by St John about Journey missing the mark on this album earlier in the thread...they should have included a yet UNRELEASED live version of DSB for the casual fan, and for the diehards include something on this I don't have as a reason to make the purchase. ...fuck, some here would lay down a few bucks for the sound of Perry's turds plopping into toilet water.

But see, the majority of the money Journey is making off of the diehards isn't coming from the Greatest Hits. They're coming from concert tickets and new music. The big jump of Greatest Hits sales are coming from those casual fans, new and old. So, it makes sense to capitalize on this and release a "part II" for those casual fans to be exposed to a little deeper look at the catalog.

That's a thought for a future release ...and for diehard Perry fans.
As stated earlier, this is a fine release for NEW fans ...something to expand upon, get their feet wet, give
them a little taste of something beyong GH's the first. I'm afraid if you're going to get
anything post~Perry ...you're going to have to rely on someone other than Perry ...Why would he?!?!
I do not see the diehards as the target audience, here...it's friggin' brilliant!!

Of course!... BUT, I won't be buying as I have all these tunes already. For me, give me even ONE thing new on this and I might consider a purchase. At least I'd place the disc in my hands and look it over. For others, including DSB on it might be the kicker into tossing it into their shopping carts at Wallyworld.
Honestly, do you think tracks #7 & #16 would be missed and might potentially bring in more revenue than a previously unreleased version of DSB and something from "the vault" (if one even exists)? If it's all about the $$$, the Journey camp missed out on a few dollars here.

I guess it's a matter of perspective. You say "holds the keys" and I say "lives in the past." Listen, the guy is content with helping Sony repackage the same thing over and over and over, and that's great. Like they really need help with a track listing to which songs charted or were popular! I'm all for selling products. But to offer up the mere consent of Neal and Jon as some badge of merit for a guy that has toyed with "scales, thinking about it, demos, 50 songs" and every other bullshit half-truth is just lame. Kind of like "Uncle Stevie isn't getting any younger, you know?" The guy sits on his ass for 17 years doing nothing but playing the "Journey didn't wait for me!!!" victim and now he's playing the age card?!? Someone has a major problem with the truth.

The Greatest Hits drops to #77 this week on Billboard. Also, Escape departs the scene after its nice little six weeks run. The latter, along with Captured is still selling a few copies with bothalbums maintaining a presence on Billboard's catalog chart.
Eclipse seems to have run its course as far as the boost from the TV appearances. I would have to say the GH benefited more than anyone on that bit of media promotion, getting back into the Top 50 and shifting over ten thousand copies during that period.

Personally, I would have loved to have seen a "Greatest Hits" album that had early demos of those songs, or something special from the vault, but that's me being one who already owns all of Journey's stuff. Kind of like how Billy Joel did a few years ago. Something you wouldn't necessarily listen to on a regular basis, but still a cool thing to have.

Just like back in the 80's. Neil gets to release his solo record (Eclipse) and Perry could release HIS turd recording.

Bet you Perry's would outsell Eclipse.

If it's released under Sony, it just might. That's something I wouldn't even have imagined a year ago but the Eclipse launch practically lowered the bar into the fucking dirt as far as selling a product.

Doubt it. Just as people aren't wanting to hear Eclipse, Street Talk and For the Love of Strange Medicine aren't burning up the charts either.

Journey was a juggernaut in the early and mid-80's. They were one of the top selling acts in the world, one of the most profitable and one of the most adored. Why? Talent and management with unmatched vision. But, right around 1986, a certain someone decided he knew what was best for the band and became the manager and new creative visionary. His subsequent maneuvers and keen management skills, coupled with what he thought was the new sound that fan wanted to hear, took *his* new band and solo projects, made 4 albums (ROR, ATW, FTLOSM and TBF) and they sold a combined 3.5 million records. Eclipse is no more of a flop than Against The Wall. How many did that fine effort sell? This band has been mostly in a tail spin since the hostile takeover circa 1986.

The difference being as I said, Sony. Also, I'm pretty sure Perry could (if he chooses) go on Idol. He has been offered an invitation before. I'm not saying he would sell like gangbusters but even 50 or 60k would be a success in his case.
