CHILD ABUSE!!!!

Postby Rip Rokken » Thu Aug 25, 2011 2:14 am

Woman convicted of child abuse for using hot sauce on the tongue for punishment -- she went on the Dr. Phil Show, and the complaints from viewers got her arrested! MY MOM used to do this to me -- got the idea from our next door neighbor. I just called her and asked if there was a statue of limitations.

I would have gone to argue for the lady's defense, actually. It's quite obvious from the video that she's using some cheap brand of Louisiana-style hot sauce which is anything but hot. I could gargle with that stuff and it wouldn't bother me. For punishment, I highly recommend this stuff -- it will eat a hole in your tongue, and you have to sign a release just to buy it.

What a brain-dead jury. Fuck, Tapatio isn't even that hot and a cold shower is far from abuse. The woman sure looks like a nut, though. But I'd have voted not guilty. What part of the law did she break? More specifically, where is the actual wording and guidelines explaining what is and what isn't against the law? The law seems very vague, and I'd have given this ugly bitch the benefit of the doubt.

I could be wrong, but I think I happened to see this episode. Which is funny, because I have only seen it a handful of times! But I THINK a sibling videotaped as she did this? And the child was screaming bloody murder in the cold shower begging his mom please to not do it, and let him out. Made me want to cry...and most of his audience too....pretty sure that's what happened to the brain dead jury ;)

Yep, here's the YouTube link...not sure if it's in the article. What a dumb ass for having a sibling tape it too. Dr Phil made clear before the show, it was not his staff taping, because they would have stopped her.

Well, one has to remove emotions when the law comes into play, and if every parent was found guilty anytime their child "screamed bloody murder," we'd have more parents behind bars than not. Again, what did this lady do that broke the law? Nothing.

Oh and sorry but I raised 3 children. All kids have issues in school now and then. This is a LITTLE boy. What if he has ADD or something, that makes behaving harder for him????? This woman deserves it. Watching it again makes me want to claw her eyes out!

I agree, and I think I will go after my mom in court anyway for putting Tabasco on my tongue, even though it was only once or twice and I love hot sauce. Truth is, I was much more scarred over the time she ripped the head off my G.I. Joe as retaliation for me pulling the head off my sister's Barbie. The punishment certainly did not fit the crime -- you could pop Barbie heads right back in, but the G.I. Joe head was held in place by an elastic band and hook, so that soldier needlessly suffered an irreversible decapitation.

Sorry, but I have to agree with Dan. Take the situation my wife and I have with our special needs daughter, who has some extreme emotional problems. Back in the day, when she would rage for sometimes literally HOURS, we would have to put her in a therapeutic hold to keep her from harming us, herself, or destroying property. You would have thought we were seriously abusing her because she really was screaming bloody murder and what we had to do for both our sakes probably even looked like abuse but it was our only choice. In this case, the situation was a little different but you can't judge the overreactions of a child on whether or not the punishment was "abuse".

BTW...Once these therapeutic holds were over, it was amazing the difference in my daughter. She would finally just quit struggling and relax. It was almost as if she was completely different person and didn't even really seem like she remembered what had happened to begin with.

Getting harder and harder to discipline children these days.My six year old daughter and five year old son have a time out period when they misbehave.I also take privleges away when they don't mind.I occasionally paddle them with a paddle sometimes three or four licks but scared to admit even that because nowadays you can get in trouble for trying to discipline your children.A man here recently almost got his daughter taken away just for using a small belt and whipping her on the butt with it.My dad who looks like Chuck Norris and was quite fond of using a belt or switch when i was coming up as a kid sat me down recently and told me he was wrong when i was growing up and he does not want me even using a small paddle, lol.I guess a lot of grandparents get soft in their old age but my dad was hard but firm in his day.Kids need discipline and to know there are consequences.

I just find our laws interesting. If I hit my husband around when his behavior isn't what I like, I'd go to jail. Do it to a kid....oh he needs it go grow up normal. Yeah ok.

I don't know of anywhere in the country where you'd be arrested for spanking your husband. In fact, you'd probably get a flood of calls ASKING you to do the same thing to lots of other men. I'm just sayin'...

Yes, and though I disagree with her punishments, I don't find them to be in violation of the law.

StevePerryHair wrote: It's CLEAR torture to me.

Torture is defined as "the act of inflicting excruciating pain" and I think you're reaching a bit here. Cold water simply can't do that. Hot water could! I'm not a proponent of what she did, but I will commend her for clearly outlining why he was in trouble, what he did wrong, what he's supposed to do and why his actions led to his punishments. There's actually a lot of good going on in that video. And I know of kids his age that would have stood in that shower with their arms folded and their faces stoic ... just to prove a point. And I was one of them!

StevePerryHair wrote:There is no excuse to discipline a child this way.

Perhaps not, but until I see a law that clearly outlines what she did as wrong, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

StevePerryHair wrote:Our most helpless have NO rights and it's disgusting!!! Look how old he is!! This makes me angry

His admission shows an understanding of what's right and wrong, and he simply chose not to do the right thing. And his mother disciplined him in a way that she deemed appropriate. I'd be more concerned about kids that misbehave in class and are sent home to indifferent parents. Or worse yet, parents that defend the actions of those kids! This lady is trying to exact change, and while she's arguably exploiting her son to get on TV, something tells me that she just wants him to behave properly. Those cold showers will be a distant memory very soon. I'd be interested to see how her other 5 kids turned out. That would probably tell us a lot.

I went to a private grade school and we were subjected to proper punishments all the time! If we were caught out of our seats more than once, our third grade teacher would pour rice on the floor, make us roll up our pants and kneel on it. Man, that hurt like a motherfucker! If we were caught disrupting class by talking more than once we had to take our socks off and put them in our mouths. That sucked, too!  Add to that those decrepit nuns hitting us all the fucking time and we pretty much had a school that ran like clockwork with minimal distractions. In second grade if you got caught talking more than once, the teacher would duct tape your mouth shut. She would toilet paper your head to keep your hair from getting tape on it and then run the tape across your skull and jaw line. That shut us up real quick.
I also remember one girl decided to let us all in on the fact that "fucking" Santa Claus wasn't real. Using the F-word got her taken to the arts and craft sink where she got a healthy mouthful of soap to chew on. I don't think our parents ever thought twice about it after we told them. Do something wrong and there will be consequences, pretty cut and dried.

Ive given both my kids (2 drops of ) Tabasco a couple times each and that was enough for them to listen, cause when I mention the hot sauce, they do listen.
So while I think it was a great tool to get them to listen, I can see how it can be seen as torture if its used over and over and over again.

She used more than 2 drops from how she held that bottle...and I was more bothered by the cold shower than a little hot sauce. I never used means like this with my kids. I'm not going to be a hypocrite and say I never lost control and smacked my children, but I'm not proud of it and feel it accomplishes nothing. Taking my 15 year old daughters cell away is equvalent to cutting her right arm off!

This was a child who had little things he got in trouble for in school. Why not get go the root of the problem and find out why? Even with his mom doing this over and over, he still did these things. KNOWING his consequence. The kid was like 5. I think it's crappy parenting BUT she went on that show to get help....so she WANTED another way....so it does bother me that it wasn't considered. To me that's not a great lesson for the mom either, to punish her when she wanted help.

I'm definitely on board with you and Lynn, in that regard. There was a little too much taunting going on for my tastes. Honestly, had she been a bit softer in her tone and delivery, I think the jury would have found her not guilty. And I think the deciding factor was her very cold approach to the child. No pun intended!

To me, the anticipation and how she dragged it out just added to the torture for me. I had a really hard time watching it. By the time the end comes, I have cried both times I've seen it   There are just better ways. And to have her young daughter tape it? That just adds a whole new level of crazy to me!! I should show my kids that tape as an example of "do you know how lucky you are"  Maybe I can get some appreciation around here!!

Exactly! There is a big difference between discipline, and then just flat out being a bully to a child that small and that young.
