Definitely this. From the look of it, it's thanks to Jonathan and Neal that Eclipse was so well produced and mixed.

Yeah, it sounded like Neal wasn't happy & felt like Shirley rushed them. I would definitely like to hear a Journey album under new production management...

I don't even get why a lot of bands hire him for album production. A lot of folks don't seem to like his work.

I don't actually dislike it...it just might be time for a change. TBF, Arrival, Revelation, Eclipse...maybe use someone else next time?

I'm pretty sure that the great sonic on Eclipse can be, in large part, attributed to David Kalmusky.

What about working with Bob Rock or Mutt? Not sure, but it is definitely time for a change. Not a big Shirley fan.

probably a combination of several things...
1) he's a musician, so can relate to bands and actually help them improve the songs
2) he's apparently very good at managing egos
3) gets things done fast without wasting time --> saves money for the label
4) likely cheaper than some people like Mutt Lange

I agree. Anyone thinking to attribute the wonderful mix down to Neal and Jon only need to go back to Disc two of Revelation. Everyone writing off Shirley might want to remember that he was the one that suggested bringing David in and it appears to have been a great move.

Kevin Shirley is deaf in one ear and can't hear with the other.

+1

Fixed & screw the casual fan!

... and what's left of their careers... Eclipse (and more music in that vein) will relegate live Journey to the nostalgia tours... because it IS the casual fan that packs those arenas... and they want legacy sounding Journey... not Eclipse-sounding Journey...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Another Eclipse, and Journey will be relegated to doing boat shows with Hassselhof.

"Come see the band that brought you "Broken Arms" and the "Night Rider" on Norwegian Cruise Lines, this month only! Plus, upgrade to a luxury cabin, and receive free oatmeal and dentures for one year!"

And someone please tell me how not liking Eclipse makes one "closed minded". Does that mean I'm "open minded" because I loved Piano With a View and Dream, After Dream?

Let's not go into this topic here now, shall we?

That said, I'd love to see the band do an album similar sonically to Dream After Dream. Very special album, that is.

If computers were available when I was your age, I would have usually made such a post after brushing my teeth and wanking to a Farrah Fawcett poster attached to my bedroom wall. :D

Since Eclipse isn't performing well in terms of sales, maybe the next album should be Greatest Hits Live 2...maybe put 1 or 2 new songs on it like Mirrorball...

I plan on getting Eclipse this week when I hit Walmart for groceries.
