Bingo! Love SA...love how Journey got back on the map with him. However, he was probably in over his head, and voice. He's a great talent. But I for one have always been surprised that he lasted as long as he did. His voice is a little different, and definitely unique, but never powered enough for prolonged Journey catalog touring.
After a few yrs (2000+), Journey let themselves get into a comfort zone of playing their music and being on the road. They put out an album or so, but that was probably more of just doing the things expected, rather than doing the things they wanted or needed. They let it go too far, and got cliche. I think this was very much evidenced by the boring shows of just them on a blank stage and not really putting on a big rock show with all the glitz & bling. They tried to change it up with that 30yr extended concert thing, but that was a gamble that didn't really work. The Def Leppard tour was just an extension to keep it all going. Unfortunately, it was too late...and they did what they had to do to keep it from dying.
That's not a diss on JSS. He was their savior, at the time. And many thought they should continue, or branch-off with him. But in the 11th hour, they finally had enough. They took a break, and re-tooled.
