Love hearing a different take on the song and not a karaoke clone mimic.
Journey looks tougher there and not a band that would be on "Ellen".

This is my very favourite Soto/Journey track. He nailed this one live....real energy and passion in the vocals.
Aaron wrote:That is one of the better tracks I've heard with JSS. I was not a big fan of him in Journey but he does well on ATL. It sounded like there was a lot of background vocals on the track towards the end. Was Deen up in the mix as well? It was hard to hear who was singing what.
In any event, JSS is a good stage leader and has great stage presence. He's good to study.

He was so good vocally that it took Augeri/Castronovo Soto/Castronovo to replicate it. So what?????
Worked for me!!!!!

Yeah, and some canned backing vocal tapes including some of Steve Perry himself. Don't forget!![]()
But this WAS a great job by JSS. Didn't dig him overall with the band, but he really shone on this and I'll Be Alright Without You.
Aaron wrote:If it's true that Perry vocals are included in that show, then they suck as a band and have no capability vocally. I figured Deen was pushing but if that's Perry vocals in the background (and my ear thought it was when I heard it), then the band is a complete fraud. And this is after TG?Fuck them, their front man and their help. Is Pro Tools how Arnel has magically started singing in key as well? Assholes.

Well, I mean... canned backing vocals are pretty acceptable at this point for a LOT of bands inside and outside the AOR genre. I don't necessarily have a problem with them even though I'd rather hear the band try their hand at reproducing them. Deen sings background and typically does so very well. But just two guys (Deen and lead singer X) CANNOT reproduce all those layers of Perry. And Ross, Schlong, and Cain simply can't contribute to most of those backing vocals.
I'm 95% sure I hear Perry tracks in their backing vocals. Always thought so. Maybe someone can confirm. I'm only going by my ear here, but I have a pretty good ear.

Ask the Lonely, Edge Of The Blade, and I'll Be Alright Without You - Jeff absolutely owned those songs.

I would add Where Were You the list. The 3 JSS concerts I saw they did this song every time and it rocked.
I always wanted to see JSS and Deen do Feeling That Way/Anytime and Just The Same Way.

What if Deen did Perry's part and JSS did Rollie Just a thought...the energy JSS brought to the stage made a difference. I know that is kindda weird but it seemed like the band was into the songs more with JSS and they had an "Edge" to them...it was a feeling thing and it was totaly opposite when I saw the tour this year there seemed to be a disconnect between the band. AP was the only one moving around..this is all just my thoughts and what I would have liked to see.
I was gald SA brought Journey back and was very excited to have JSS in the band.. Im having a hard time getting into the AP lead Journey
Oh man, I don't think either of those songs would be flattering for JSS. Perry's voice was unbelievably high in that era. Jeff obviously did better on the songs where Perry's voice had lowered quite a bit, such as the 3 Ed named above.

Interesting thought re: JSS doing Rolie.
I don't dig the AP era at all. Like you said, the whole thing feels boring and sterile. Honestly, I have a very critical ear when it comes to listening to music on CD (I play a little guitar so I know a little more about dissecting music above what a casual listener would do), but when it comes to live shows I almost ALWAYS just end up enjoying things even if I notice some warts. In other words, I hardly ever come home and say "That was a 'bad' show." But, I truly feel like the (substantial) money I spent to see Journey this year was one of the bigger wastes of money I've ever dropped on a concert. Foreigner and Night Ranger were great, but Journey left such a sour taste that trumps good performances by the other two.
The_Noble_Cause wrote:Like all great frontman, Jeff brought out the best in the band and the crowd. Not sure how long he could have lasted on the road. Even here, the way he switches from chest voice to falsetto makes me nervous. A song like DSB would simply be out of his depth.
