No one wants to do the hard yards anymore, and in a way they are right to think that, as there is no reward at the end like there used to be.

Yeah, record companies don't let artists develop like years ago. Some of the greatest bands ever to make music would never achieve success in todays musical climate.

All record companies care about now is their bottom line, they want to get the music out there as quickly as possible and for the least amount of money. Thanks to Auto-tune, record labels don't have to spend the time and money developing an artist and giving them the vocal training they need. Auto-tune can take care of that almost instantly and for a fraction of the cost.

This may be a chicken and egg thing, but I think the fans don't allow bands to develop. Not fans like us, but today's youth. Gotta have it now, gotta get the next song on. Maybe the record companies caused it, but it seems there is no going back. The population doesn't have the patience anymore. I know of some really good bands and they last one or two albums and nobody is going to listen after that. It's total saturation and competition. There is no emphasis on the album anymore - it's all singles.

This is what they have sadly been taught.

Today's generation doesn't have the patience or the attention span to sit and listen to an entire album.

I am convinced if Zombie Elvis rose from the dead and put on a concert people would ask for an impersonator because he couldn't hit the notes in "My Way" anymore.

Vocals are the last thing I worry about in rock. It helps. No question. I like Ted Nugent better when Derrek St Holmes tours with him, but "Just What The Doctor Ordered" rocks just as hard with Uncle Ted on vocals. I just saw Van Halen with DLR in Atlantic City a few weeks ago. It was an awesome show! Yet the youtube A.I. dweeb types bitched about his vocals. Wake up! Roth was never a good singer and I have the 70's bootlegs to prove it. But it was David Lee Roth fronting Van Halen and that rocks. Maybe they should tour with the guy from "Romeo Delight" instead?

Bruce Springsteen sounds tone deaf but is a great live show. Mick Jagger and the Stones would never have existed in this environment.

"Death" to American Idol and all who watch it. Especially if you call yourself a male. Put on a dress already.

Rant over.

That's very narrow minded. These shows have been around forever. Some of our greatest stars got their break this way. Most of the vocalists on AI have been working most of their lives with music and have trained for piano, guitar, etc.

The Ed Sullivan show was another.

Rock has been and gone and its great fodder for the vocalist of today to give their take on. It is stressed that the singer has to make it their own. Years ago Some eight/ten years back, I traded a few emails with Rolie and he at that time stated that the new music was not up to snuff in comparison to the 70's and 80' and I wrote that probably not as at that time, it was the stoned ientaining the stoned. It was a crazy ride and its in the past.

This is the answer that some guy gave to another who bitched about wrestling.

"Know whats annoying is when people like you come in here and question why we WWE fans like wrestling so much.

Everyone has there own show they like to watch. You might sit around watching country music videos all day. Do I ask you why do you watch those stupid videos. "no I dont"

If you dont like wrestling why not just go find something that you do like.

Theres people like you who like to spend there monday's walking around the park picking your little flowers and sitting by the lake watching the birds fly by.

Im not mad at your gay life style

Then theres people like me who like watching hbk and hardy and hhh put there lifes on the line to entertain me every other day buy jumping of cages and ladders and beating each other up.

Its all about who you are and what you lik."

.......................

Good advice. Don't like it, don't watch it. That's one smart fellow........I think?

You are right in that, for the most part the ones that win these shows are not the most talented ones. That's why you never hear of them again, it's usually the ones that don't actually win. But every once in a while one of the talented ones do. Michael Grimm that won America's Got Talent a couple years ago blew me away..........IMO the industry could use some more of these old school soulful blues men ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b598yZcxiX0 Loved that performance. :)

When you let the fans vote it stops being a music competition, it becomes a popularity contest where the best looking person wins.

"Rock Star"... INXS took the normal route of "we need to audition a singer for our band"... and turned it into some Frankenstinean event... "J.D. Fortune".... the fool who won.. who was living in his car, under a bridge at the time he auditioned... couldn't handle his "instant fame"... and after one album with INXS...

...went back to living in his car...

But there was another singer on RockStar... a fella named Ty Taylor... He went back to L.A... hooked up with some friends with like minded musical interests, in the famed location of musical lore - Laurel Canyon.

The result?

Vintage Trouble... one fucking great band.. now managed by Doc MagHee (Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, KISS, Skid Row, Hootie & the Blowfish, Scorpions, Night Ranger)

This cover (shot live) of "With A Little Help From My Friends" is SMOKIN..

Also from that show and doing OK with a bit of a cult following is Marty Casey. His band "The Lovehammers" opened at an ARF rocks show back in 2007 in front of a semi-Journey act that included Soto, Schon, Cain, and Valory (forget who was on drums that eve). Anyway Casey and the Lovehammers rocked it that night....
