I am familiar with both Yngwie and Gilbert. I understand and can play all of these techniques. I don't believe Neal is as accurate or clean as either one of these players. Both Yngwie's and Paul's use of these techniques and musical approach/language is considerably different than Neal's. I think it is a stretch to compare Neal's shredding ability either one of these guys. All that said I would rather listen to Neal than Paul or Yngwie. I think they play Yngwie CDs down in Guantanamo bay to get the terrorists talking! I don't know Neal personally so I won't judge him. I would love to hear you play sometime!
Yer correct.. Neal isn't as clean as Yngwie... although I see Gilbert playing much more similar to Schon' in that Gilbert blends all picking styles too...
I'm no shredder... while I was taught how, I wasn't interested in putting in the time to develop those skills.. I was more interested in songwriting... sp I morphed from an 80's player into Tom Petty... lmao.. but I can totally appreciate the skill required.
If there was one guitarist from the 80's who I was in total awe of (besides all t he traditional heroes) .. it was Jason Becker..

I think we both Agree that Schons' strong suit is sticking to soloing with melody and phrasing... with the occasional burst of speed.. and leaving the shredding alone.. it just doesn't fit with Journey..
