No spin here. Arnel sounded fine.

No such thing, they're taking us to a lower place this time, to put a spin on a phrase.

Rock bottom was releasing concert videos to VH-1 Classics featuring the lead singer hiding his face with a fuzzy oversized microphone. This is fine. No less of a shameless publicity stunt than when Foreigner played at Nascar. And hey, at least Michaele Salahi wasn't on-stage in some slutty overalls grinding on Neal and dancing a hoedown.

Yeah, I'm just teasing.
This was a great publicity move that, as far as I can tell, Arnel botched. But I haven't seen a quality clip yet, though I'm hoping it will be released soon.

Aside from the one note toward the end, Arnel was solid. I didn't think he or the Rascal Flatts guy really impressed. Carrie Underwood also sounded tired. But, hey, it's a live show. Nitpick away.

Really? I am not picking a fight, because I like you  But I thought he started off horribly and ended worse.

I thought he started off strong and I was like "Wow, he's bringing it tonight!" But then, the train ran off the tracks.

I did not think this is that bad. Their appearance on the CBS morning show, where Augeri's voice wasn't working and he didn't even sound like a tenor, was asscrack horrible. This CMT performance won't win over any new fans, but Arnel didn't sound horrendous. He squeezed in a few vocal acrobatics and did what he could with a 3 minute performance. We're talking less than a full song here guys. I just don't see the point. Flatts and Journey should've done some kind of medley.

Journey was set up for failure big time. When you edit a song that everyone can sing along to by heart, totally disrupting the cadence for the audience (and in my opinion the performance also) you can't win.

Sounds like we've identified the problem.
Don, when you of all people start thinking any positive thoughts about new!Journey, you single handedly disrupt the balance of the universe which can only be restored by fucking with Arnel's pitch.

Well, the whole duet thing didn't seem rehearsed enough as far as the hand off between vocals. I'm pretty sure RF sings the song a whole step down on their tour so this was different to what they are used to also.

All things considered, with Rock Of Ages opening soon, maybe Anyway You Want It would be have been a better choice.

Watched the shitty clip again and the crowd really looks enthused. Talk about audio dissonance.
Looking for a quality clip now. I beseech thee, o masters of the interwebz, to find me one.

Who said that?
Big difference between saying he sounded "fine" and "decent" and brainlessly jissuming fanboy accolades like "best performance in the universe!!!"
Panning the performance as completely "awful" or saying that Arnel flat-out "can't sing" is just as unfair, dumb, and cheap. I know Neal used to read these forums for feedback, but most of the opinions posted these days are jokes. Everything the band does is pretty much interpreted as the greatest thing ever or a musical sign of the beast and the end of days. In some cases, like the "Resonate" video, these apocalyptic fears are warranted. In other cases, like this slightly subpar performance, it's total hyperbole. It's live TV, folks. One performance. Barely half of a song. Chill out.

Arnel doesn't annunciate well at all. His timing was off. And his vocal tone was horrible.

I have watched the clip 5 times now. I just don't see how anyone can say anything good about this guy. Heck, throw Reed Grimm up there - he is 10 times the talent Pineda is.

Did anyone else get a bit of American Idol/ Talent show vibe with the camera angles and the whole Little Asian/ Big American thing going on there?

Much better, thanks Don. I wish they would have got the introduction, though.
Arnel sounded pretty good minus the two money notes. The last one sounded great until the very end when he overused falsetto.
I'm with TNC on this one. Good, not great, but not horrendous.

Anyone else notice Arnel screwed up the lyrics @ the 1:50 mark?

Kinda fits up nicely with my final Journey show when Arnel said, "Here's a song from the album........uh well the song's called lights." Classic.

It wasn't a screw up, it was to accommodate the time.

Actually, and don't faint here, but I agree with ya. I didn't think it was awful, I didn't think it was that bad.....I only watched the clip Don posted the once but I thought Arnel sounded ok except for a couple high end notes he missed, but hey it happens to the best of them. Gotta love how people just love those classic Journey songs, that country crowd was totally singing along.

But please, please, Journey........do not follow in Bon Jovi's footsteps and start cutting country albums!

Faint? Hardly. I always suspected that you were a woman of superb judgment and agreeing with me only proves it!
I just watched the video posted on the CMT website and Arnel sounded very solid. Minus the typical pronunciation problems, he made a bad decision to undersing the first note and oversing the second. Otherwise, pitch and clarity were great.

For those who caught the performance right before Journey was introduced, that was Glen Campbell's daughter Ashley on Banjo.

This was never intended to be about Journey at all. They were just the nostalgia act supporting Rascal Flatts, and both were riding the coat tails of DSB's recent resurgence. That's all.

Actually glad it was AP, and not some hyped Perry thing. I mean, if they'd all reconciled just for one night, and Perry did this...well, then it'd be bad press. But hey, who really gives a s#it? It's just the music business selling more product. That's America...and yes (In my best John Wayne), 'why I love her'.

I agree not great but good enough! I think AP has the pronunciation problems when he's a bit nervous since recent interviews show he's improved dramatically! It'll be interesting to see how he does on this year's tour!

Here's the video rerouted from CMT's website:

http://tasteofcountry.com/rascal-flatts ... ic-awards/

Like I said, he did very well, but made some pretty bad choices when it came to the mega-notes. It's obvious he can hit them by the way he nailed the outro, but when it comes to thinking on his own, he's still an amateur.

Seeing as Perry was trending Top Five on twitter right along with Journey and RF after the performance, it didn't seem to matter if he was there physically or not.
