The concert attached to the end is truly horrific. Nearly ruined Perry's mystique entirely for me, I couldn't believe that the guy on Captured was the guy I watched there.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

At what point? I have this documentary buried somewhere in my closet. I just happened to skip to 1 hr 9mins where Steve is singing Still They Ride.... Sounds damn good to me!

The guy on Captured, no one could substain that voice forever. Look at Mariah Carey. At the beginning of her career she had an amazing voice. Sang effortlessly from from top to bottom and back again. Now? Rumor has it she mouths all of her vocals.

Tell him, girlfriend!!

I saw one of the Dallas shows on this tour and while it wasn't as good as the Escape tour, it was still a great show.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

You are one lucky man! My friend Linda saw them during the ROR tour. I told her that I am really angry with her for not rescuing me from my trailer park and taking me with her. Never mind, I didn;t know her back then or that I was a Bon Jovi fan and would have probably said Journey who?????????

If I had only know that Bon Jovi would be playing the grandma and grave yard circuit 50 years later, I might have skipped one of their shows to see Steve the VOICE Perry!

Back in the day, I loved songs like Who's Crying Now, but had no idea how prolific the man was til I was given a copy For The Love of Strange Medicine. Would have seen him on tour then, but he cut it short. Then lost my last chance with TBF, didn't happen tour....

Just a word of warning to the FLSM snarkers, in the wise words of Lucy, from Peanuts, "I'll pound you!"

The Escape show still remains my favorite concert of all time. I didn't see the ROR or FTLOSM tours, regretfully, I was busy being a family man and had kind of gotten away from all of that.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but "Chain Reaction" was a memorable disaster.

Me personally, I'd take the "frontiers" version of Perry's voice over anything else he's ever done. While I do obviously like his earlier stuff with the band, I felt his voice was too "clean". I liked the mix of grit and rasp that he added to his vocals during the mid 80's.

When I first saw this video, I was a bit surprised at the performance...not let down, just surprised. At that point (1989, as I was just getting into the band), the only live material that I hear up to that point was Captured. This performance was much more rushed and....well, different. But I still like it to this day.

I have since found out that you should keep in mind, it is much easier to be critical while viewing a performance at home on TV/DVD/Video. Being at a live show, getting swept up with the crowds and energy makes for a much better and forgiving experience!

I don't have this on VHS or DVD, so I've downloaded it off of You Tube.

Too much smoke, too much coke.. Have you EVER seen them so jacked up. You could tell Perrys' upper range was hit or miss and he knew it. Smart singer thought. Smart as they come. When holding long notes and realizing that he was running out of gas he could just yell, "Phily, ROCK AND ROLL !" Or something else. They were rushing for him and from coke. They were all bug eyed and charged to the point that it was out of character for the band judging from every other available performance. Perry had gained weight from drinking (maybe) and roids (more possible) trying to keep his voice up. The weight gain was sudden though not too bad. Side effect or roids as anyone that has taken them knows. You can put on 20 in a month. He paid dearly in the end.. No, I dont have proof of this but I have been around the block enough to know.. Everything combined burnt his voice up. Escape tour scratched the paint, Frontiers started burning oil and ROR just threw a rod... I bet his vocal cords look like Ron Jeremy rammed in to them a couple of thousand times. Poor guy.. He could have stopped sooner and preserved.. A break after Escape would have been a great idea and Frontiers could have waited till 85.

Studio-wise, I agree. Live recordings, yikes.

I'd have to agree with you on that!
