Great song, (IMO) Journeys Best, and Perry's best vocals.

The only thing about the live version is I believe the high notes at the end of the song is prerecorded. If not Perry must have sold his soul to the devil for being able to hit those notes every night.

Those notes Perry sings are probably pre-recorded about as much as Schon's guitar notes are pre-recorded.

Seriously though, the first time I heard him sing the ending..the friends I was with had to convince
me it was ALL Perry... I thought it was from achon's guitar. Thought no one could do that. Happily
I was proven very wrong. :D

As many times as we saw them thru the years back then ... each time was one of those 'hair stand on end'
moments. When Rolie and Perry did trade-off vocals...nothing short of spectacular. :D

When SP paired up with NS guitar... also nothing short of spectacular... :D
Perry's good natured bonhomie & the world’s most charmin smile, knocked fans off their feet. Sportin a black tux, gigs came alive as he swished around the stage thrillin audiences w/ charisma that instantly burnt the oxygen right out of the venue.TR.com

Hey Fezzy!!! How are you doing doll? Yes, incredible as it sounds and it sounds incredible it's hard to believe that anyone could get that sound out of their body unless they were possessed; but he did. He had to have left part of himself on the stage floor because that is just so darn soulful it had to have hurt! I bet he could leave the stage and look back over his shoulder and still see himself singing that last note!

I was always skeptical about that last high note in this performance. In the original MTV-aired version, it kinda looked like he pulled away from the mic just a half second sooner than what you hear of his voice. Not sure if they 'doctored it up' for the DVD release, along with editing Perry saying "M-Television" to "MTV". Regardless....it's a stellar performance, and one of my favorites!

I have no idea either way, and certainly not musically proficient enough to be able to decipher either way. But I do remember the radio interviews SP gave to promote the DVD in 2006. He seemed to make it point to give out all the details into the production and his thought process ... the MTV change, because nobody would know what M-Television means ... and back to original "here in Houston" (in DSB, edited out in earlier released version - the GH '78-'86 DVD). Also, other than fine tuning and updating to current sound taking from the master tapes (which were 20 yrs old & broadcasted for TV), there were absolutely no re-dubbing or enhancements done to either the singing or playing.
That's what he said ... what we hear in the Dvd is exactly what everybody heard in the arena in Houston.

Here's the original MTV-aired version. Go to the 24:20 mark. It's just a bit off from the DVD release. Maybe it was the MTV feed, maybe it was Cain's keyboards that were edited out of the DVD to make it look more authentic. Who knows...again, will always be one of my favorite performances by any band.

That is the greatest vocal performance ever! I too tater thought towards the end it was Neal's guitar till I saw the live version of this and saw it was Steve voice...amazing so amazing.

My vote would be this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=659zk35_wRQ

I believe the audio is the raw sound board feed prior to processing. This shows Perry at his best without all of the "love" added. His raw vocals are on kill here.

Oh Neal and his purple shirts!
And what happened to Ross' vocals?
A cool video, though!

Thanks for the link, Art. I actually like this live version more .. so raw, nothing “cleaned up” about it, like being in the audience that night. Hour+10 went by quick … boy, I love following & watching pro team sports, and these guys were in such great shape … the proficiency … very impressive. It’s just like what Herbie said in one of their docu’s (paraphrasing) “we’re constantly training, for battle, like professional athletes train for games.”

Some thoughts: Steve & Neal stood out, but all the guys were great in their own niche. I didn’t know Jon makes more faces than Ross (haha), and he stood the whole show (isn’t it hard to play piano standing up?). Been awhile since I played the officially released DVD … I don’t see/hear much difference in Steve’s high note on M/F ... could be the original (unedited version) is shorter, less drawn out??? I did notice he was going (barely) out of breath on some verses …golly, he’s human after all! … while “polished” version, he was perfect!!! In past discussions, fans have blamed Jon’s hiring for “neutering” the band. But, as we can see here, they’re doing plenty of “rocking” (Escape Tour). Actually, when you think about it, the GR-era songs were much less rocking than Escape’s songs. In retrospect, I think the change in song direction was for the benefit of SP … gosh, who could keep singing these type of songs night after night, year after year, without serious damage to the vocal cords??? And we know SP as a perfectionist, so he had to give it his all, for the fans, at every show. The rest, as they say, is history.

This, too, is my favorite live performance of SP. Can't understand a few have criticized this performance as him being "raspy." :?: I think it shows him at his raw best ... the scream (high note) near the end ... that's to die for.

As for Ross ... he sings a line ... the next moment, he's singing in silence. Did someone shut his mic off ... :P ?
