What if Perry had toured?

Postby tj » Wed Mar 21, 2018 11:50 am

This has probably been kicked around before, but now it's been more than 20 years since the band moved on without Perry. Where do you think that they would be today if he had been able to tour 20 years ago? Would they still be on the road now? Dumped Perry after the TBF tour and kept going? Toured every four years or so to bring in some cash and keep their name out there? Put out new music? So many possibilities.

I think with Perry there definitely would have been new music on a more regular basis

Perry gave up on touring with the guys during ROR. If he had toured for TBF, I have no doubt he would have called it quits again in the middle of the tour. So nothing really would have changed. One way or another, the band had to move on or quit.

Perry would have toured for "a first leg" like he did for ROR.
What's really sad we never heard the TBF songs live by him. I am sure they would do 3-5 like they did on ROR.

Let's not forget that Perry had sort of fucked up the band with Ross and Smitty fired. So, then there is that...

I think Perry's job with the TBF deal was to get them out of cold storage, and they were on their own after that, and the pay off was ten years control of the catalog. He was never going to tour with them because he couldn't have done it vocal wise. It's not hard to hear the damage to his voice on the TBF album. A lot of technical tricks were probably used to produce that album. That's just my opinion; there's nothing I know other than my own conclusions on what probably happened during the TBF period. He did a good thing for them, and that should make up for any past transgressions that many fans and probably some band members think, know, or feel he had done to harm Journey. Journey has been touring strong every since without him. I think he did what he could to make it right with them and went home to live his life in peace. These are just my opinions and nothing more.

Who even knows what the truth is. I heard Ross was in rehab at one point and needed to go.

If Perry had toured with Journey in 1998, the tour would have been huge, and there would have been huge demand for another album. Perhaps Perry knew this and didn't want to do another album. So he knew he couldn't tour. Just guessing!

I wonder if in Cain's book, it will come out that in 1985, Journey was doing another hard rock album similar to Escape and Frontiers when Perry pulled the plug on it. They scrapped all these great songs that will never be heard (because Perry made a deal with them in 1998 for them to continue on without him,) and went to work on writing Raised on Radio. That is the story I would like to hear.

Did Perry even finish his FTLOSM tour? I was thinking he either canceled some dates or had to reschedule those dates, but I could be wrong. If Perry had toured behind TBF, there is no way he would've agreed to the type of tour they had with Augeri. It would've been more of an abbreviated schedule.

Did Perry even finish his FTLOSM tour?

Lora probably has a better memory on this than I do - but Steve suffered from chronic bronchitis that entire tour - starting with his opener in Milwaukee. He soldiered through most of the dates. But it eventually caught up with him and he had to cancel a couple dates in the middle (they were some dates in the Midwest I think, Missouri or maybe it was Kansas City, not for sure -- which were made up a little later in the tour.) In the end, I believe there was supposed to be a Japan leg of that tour which they eventually cancelled after their last show, which I think was in Puerto Rico.

So the US dates he completed (I think) but ended up cancelling the overseas portion of the tour.

Wasn't his voice (although it was affected) - poor guy probably couldn't get a full breath.

Was lucky enough to be at the first two shows of the FTLOSM tour and he sounded great.

Yeah, and don't believe he "faked" degenerative hip pain. Look at all his concert footage. All that running across the stage.
Look what it did to Prince (RIP).
Luckily Perry did the smart thing, view all options before they cut you open.

LOL... No! I don't think the hip injury was just a big lie, but I like my, noble sacrifice, conspiracy theory better. Plus, they kissed and made up for TBF. All those promo interviews for the album release, nothing but group laughter and great vibes, you know the ROR experience was a non-issue. It was only when touring got canceled that the rancor started up again.

I just saw an interview with The Bare Naked Ladies (great Canadian Band!). They broke up over 10 years ago, fans have been really hoping they would get back together, just like Journey fans.
They have just been inducted into the Canadian music Hall of fame, and are getting back together for the show. They, like Journey, also likened the band experience to a marriage, not a brotherhood, and said that no one would advise anyone to "just suck it up and get back together" with an ex after 10 years, when both parties had moved on.

It sounded a lot like the situation with Journey. Fans are nostalgic and want a reunion, but all parties concerned are just not interested in reliving that part of their lives.

Fake news. Bare Naked Ladies booted their frontman for drugs. They have been consistently touring and recording. No break up.

I went to the Journey show in Detroit in 1994. Then I got tickets for the second leg of the tour the following year in Detroit, but it was cancelled due to illness. They didn't specify if it was Steve Perry who was sick.

Frontman Steven Page (SP!!) will be joining them at the award ceremony for the first time since the split. Many fans would like to see him stay on, but it's not going to happen.

I'm just saying the situation is similar to that of Journey. Fans would love to see the frontman (SP) who was with them at the top of their game come back...also not going to happen.

I wonder what Perry's expectations were for turnout on FTLOSM. To go from arenas and stadiums the last time he toured with Journey to much more intimate halls was certainly different. He would have known what size the potential audiences were based on where they were scheduled. I don't recall, were the FTLOSM shows sellouts? It seems like that would be a shock to go from arenas to not selling out concert halls, if that was the case.

He said many times he perferred the smaller more intimate venues. He did seem to interact
with the crowds more on his FTLOSM tour.

That is true. But you said the band "broke up over 10 years ago, fans have been really hoping they would get back together, just like Journey fans."
The band never broke up.

I don't really think it's similar. Replacing Perry really divided the Journey fan base. Not sure Bare Naked fans lost that much sleep over Page. One band replaced a legend. The other just replaced some guy.
