Personally, I think Deen is mega talented, playing the drums as well as singing..Now, Steve perry himself was a drummer, and I remember an interview by which Steve Smith and perry were talking, and Smitty was saying how Perry "helped him" a little by "teaching or telling" Smitty whats easier to "sing over" as for as drums go; meaning it was harder to have to sing over hard/loud strikes...Smitty was thankful and said perry was an fine drummer.

As for singing, I am with Jrnyman28.....I hear Deen for Deen, but if you know a little about singing, Deen is really a couple notches below Mr. Perry. He can go high and hold his notes great, but there is a lot less soul from Deeno..However, if Deen could stand on the front of the stage and concentrate exclusively on singing, I would like to see that. But seriously, Perry was the best.... I don't thinkthey sound alike at all IMO...

In my humble opinion, Deen does sound like Steve Perry. I think this is a solid song...I actually liked it better than the other songs Andrew posted, but I think I am going to go back and take another listen just to make sure.

In that case, allow me to extend an earnest apology.
I jumped the gun too quick. Sorry.

I just don't see why you get your panties all in a knotted bunch and feel compelled to speak whenever a comparison to Perry is made, but turn a blind eye when a comparison is made to someone else, say, Triumph singer, Rick Emett, for example.

It is probably a simple answer...that she does not know who Rik Emmett is.

And I don't really hear Rik in the song, but that is because Rik had an even higher voice than Perry did.

NC,

You should stop jumping the gun AGAIN!

I didn't comment on Rick Emett because I don't think I've heard him sing before, so I can't say whether he sounds like Perry or not.

Also I feel singers should let their OWN talent's shine for WHO they are & not try to immulate another successful singer who has "already made it" in the music business.

I agree with you.
Its also partially why I admire Steve Augeri's ability to walk the fine line between impersonation and interpretation.
He respectfully sings the Perry-sung classics without emulating the signature Perry's inflections and parlance -no easy feat.
When he sings, I hear Steve Augeri interpreting the classics in his own way, in his own natural voice.
Not utilizing Perryisms, as say, Hugo does (which are actually Same Cooke-isms, but I digress).

While Augeri's voice is high pitched a little like Perrys', the similarities stop there.

With Deen, and I could be wrong here, I can't help but get the feeling that he is really striving to sound like Perry. Yes, Deen does naturally have the range to cover Journey stuff, but he goes a step further, in his Perry-like delivery and pronounciation.
It seems affected.
Where Augeri has a high pitched voice and just tackles the material, Deen tries to purposely get himself to recreate "the Perry sound" as much as possible.
Right down to mimicing vocal minutia such as Perry pronounciation and parlance.

You may be right about Deen, TNC, but I certainly need to hear a lot more of the song to make a judgement like that. I am with the people who are surprised that he doesn't sound more like Perry.

I agree. This is the first lead vocal I have heard from Deen. But all the comments I had previously heard made me believe he would sound much more like Perry than he does on this clip.

I'll have to wait and listen to the full song.
